I Was Rewatching Rob Reiner’s Scenes From The Bear, And His Character Is More Important Than I Thought

When I heard about the passing of Rob Reiner earlier this month at age 78, I started reflecting on his impressive career as an actor, writer, and director. While many would immediately think of his iconic work like All in the Family, This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, or When Harry Met Sally…, I keep remembering his recent guest role on The Bear. Actually, after revisiting those scenes on Hulu, I realized his character plays a bigger part in the show’s fourth season than I initially understood.

Rob Reiner played Albert Schnur, a business consultant with experience helping all kinds of businesses, from large corporations to small laundromats, in three episodes of The Bear. Ebra Gibson asks Albert to mentor him as he tries to improve The Bear’s sandwich window. After reviewing Ebra’s financial information, Albert advises expanding by opening two more dedicated beef sandwich shops in the north and south suburbs of Chicago, and building a central kitchen to support them. He offers to oversee this expansion, jokingly comparing his role to Tom Hagen, the advisor in The Godfather.

Hulu is offering a 30-day free trial for both its ad-supported and ad-free plans. This gives you access to popular shows like The Bear, What We Do in the Shadows, Tell Me Lies, and Only Murders In The Building, plus a wide variety of movies. Plans start at $9.99 per month after the free trial, and this offer is available to new and some returning customers. See the deal here.

Initially, it’s hard to tell if Albert Schnur is genuinely trying to assist Ebra or if he’s attempting to deceive him. However, after meeting the other staff at the Beef and talking with Computer outside the restaurant, it becomes clear he’s sincere. It’s disappointing we won’t see more of his character, especially considering his guidance could be crucial to the future of The Bear. Throughout the fourth season, a countdown clock shows the 60 days Carmy and the team have to save the restaurant, and that clock reaches zero in the final moments of the season finale.

Now that The Bear has been renewed for a fifth season, it seems the restaurant won’t be closing anytime soon. However, aside from Marcus receiving recognition from Food & Wine magazine, things haven’t really progressed. This raises the question: unless the next season shows the restaurant gradually closing while Carmy explores life beyond being a chef, what direction will the show take?

Albert Schnur’s plan seems to be the solution. Computer was impressed with his proposal to open additional locations, and Schnur is very focused on financial results. If he can demonstrate that expanding The Beef will eventually become profitable and persuade Cicero to invest further, it could save the restaurant.

Let’s hope the storyline gets a satisfying conclusion when Season 5 of The Bear comes to Hulu, and isn’t left unfinished now that Rob Reiner has passed away. If the restaurant’s success depends on increasing sandwich sales, Albert Schnur deserves to be the one to make it happen, and ideally, we’ll see him get the recognition he deserves, even if it’s not explicitly shown.
