As a huge fan of Primal, I was totally floored by the season three trailer, but also…confused! It’s got me wondering: who is that creepy zombie figure? I thought we saw Spear, the caveman, get taken out by that massive fire demon, and the last season seemed to hint at a future without him and Fang, his T-Rex buddy. Didn’t Genndy Tartakovsky, the brilliant creator behind it all, say this was the end of their story? It’s a lot to process!
Genndy Tartakovsky considered ending Primal after its initial run. He initially planned to shift the show’s focus to new characters in an anthology format, even suggesting a title like Primal: Creation. However, he became dissatisfied with this new direction and decided to revisit the story of Spear and Fang. He realized the original story might have been cut short – only 20 episodes – and even wondered if he could bring Spear back to life after killing him off. He didn’t want a prequel, and whatever came next needed to truly feel like Primal. The idea of turning Spear into a zombie came up as a joke from someone on his team.
“I thought, Wait a minute,” Tartakovsky explained. “Zombies are usually just about gore and action. We haven’t really seen a zombie that you actually root for. So, we created a zombie hero. The idea that he’s trying to find meaning in life—even through death—is what made the concept really exciting.” The third season, starting January 11th on Adult Swim with episodes also available the next day on HBO Max, will follow Zombie Spear as he battles waves of dangerous animals, hostile villagers, and flesh-eating mutants. And, as you can see in the exclusive trailer we’re releasing, that fire demon is returning too.

The third season allowed Tartakovsky and his team to completely revamp Spear’s design. As an undead creature, his movements and sounds are different, and he appears truly terrifying. He has a gaping jaw, often with exposed brains and organs, and is covered in flies. He fights with increased savagery, completely unaffected by injuries or lost limbs. Tartakovsky intentionally made this new zombie version of Spear extremely gruesome and doesn’t apologize for it.
As a big fan of Primal, I totally get why the new design is so raw and intense. The creators also know we’re all invested in Spear’s story, which I think gives them the space to really go for it and take risks with the visuals and narrative.
