The film, which has received fantastic reviews and is a strong contender for Oscars, has become a huge hit on Peacock. It’s quickly become one of the streaming service’s most popular titles, topping its charts.
As of December 29th, Bugonia was the most popular movie on Peacock, according to Flix Patrol. It quickly reached the top spot, becoming number one in just one day. The movie also gained attention through rentals and purchases on platforms like the Apple TV Store in countries including Italy, India, and Spain.
The film Save the Green Planet!, a Korean black comedy from 2003, first appeared at the Venice Film Festival in August and was released in US theaters in late October. Starring Emma Stone, Bugonia tells the story of a powerful pharmaceutical CEO who is kidnapped by a man and his younger cousin.
The sci-fi comedy has been a hit with both audiences and critics. Currently, it has an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even higher 87% score from professional critics. Reviewers have especially praised the film’s sharp wit and its unique blend of strange and relatable moments – qualities that are now hallmarks of the director’s work.
Bugonia is gaining significant awards buzz. It’s already received three Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Musical or Comedy, and has been shortlisted for the Oscars.
Although Bugonia received a lot of pre-release praise and premiered on Peacock, it didn’t perform well in theaters. The film only earned $39 million, falling short of its $45-55 million production budget.
Plemons’ Previously Touted The Film’s Cinematic Impact
Even though Bugonia has become a surprising streaming success, Jesse Plemons had previously emphasized the importance of seeing it in a movie theater. He told the Associated Press in October that the film was “made to be experienced in theaters,” and directly appealed to viewers: “You can pause Netflix and come back to it, but you really should see this one in a theater.”
The marketing for Bugonia was very bold, and they even offered free movie tickets to people who were bald or willing to shave their heads.
While it’s been a little harder to see Bugonia recently, Emma Stone—who has collaborated with director Yorgos Lanthimos on films like The Favourite, Kinds of Kindness, and the award-winning Poor Things (for which she won the 2024 Academy Award for Best Actress)—described the film as “a very entertaining film and a ride,” suggesting it’s widely enjoyable.
It’s not a deeply serious or ponderous film,” the actress explained. “There’s a playful, slightly strange quality to it – that’s Yorgos’s signature style – and humor is woven throughout the entire story.
