It’s a pressure cooker situation right from the start!

Marty relocates his family from Chicago to Osage Beach, Missouri, a town on the Lake of the Ozarks. It isn’t long before the Byrdes encounter the local criminal element, and trouble quickly begins for everyone involved.

I’m completely captivated by this show, and it’s easily one of the best crime dramas I’ve ever seen. What really grabs you is the incredible storytelling – from the very beginning with Marty, right through to that shocking finale. It’s just so intense! The stakes are unbelievably high, and everyone feels the pressure constantly. Just when you think things might calm down, another twist appears and the story expands in unexpected ways. It’s brilliant!

The film’s gloomy atmosphere perfectly matches its somber story, enhanced by dark visuals and a powerful musical score that creates a heavy, unsettling feeling. The entire cast delivers strong performances, particularly from the actor playing Marty. Everything feels authentic and realistic, making the story truly believable.

Ozark Is a Great Show for Breaking Bad Fans

Just how alike are the shows Ozark and Breaking Bad? At first glance, they have a lot in common. Like Walter White, Marty finds himself involved in money laundering because he’s trying to protect his family.

In Breaking Bad, Walter White starts making and selling drugs because he’s diagnosed with cancer and wants to provide for his family financially. Both he and Marty begin as ordinary men who stumble into criminal activity, but over time, and through increasingly violent experiences, they transform into hardened criminals right before our eyes.

While Ozark and Breaking Bad are distinct – one a Netflix series and the other an acclaimed AMC show – they actually work well together. The differences lie in the more detailed aspects of how they’re made, like the directing style, speed of the story, and visual look.

Both shows center around their main families, but they approach storytelling differently. Ozark moves quickly with a lot of action, while the story of Walter and his changes in Breaking Bad unfolds at a more deliberate pace, allowing for deeper character development.

Ozark Features Some of TV’s Most Complex Characters

Ozark is a compelling crime drama, but it doesn’t offer a traditional hero. While Marty is a central character, he – and the rest of his family – operate in a morally gray area throughout the four seasons on Netflix.

At the start of the series, we learn that Marty’s wife, Wendy (Laura Linney), is having an affair. Like Marty, she becomes increasingly involved in criminal activity as the show progresses. Their son, Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), also starts helping to launder money, highlighting a clear family trend.

Beyond the Byrde family, Ozark features many other memorable characters with compelling, often morally questionable, stories, brought to life by talented actors. Ruth Langmore, whom the Byrdes encounter after moving to Missouri, quickly becomes a standout character, deeply involved in the central plot.

Besides Wendy, the series features compelling characters like her brother Ben Davies, Rachel Garrison, and Omar Navarro, the head of the drug cartel. Each of these characters has significant flaws, but by the end of the show, viewers are likely to feel more sympathy for them than dislike.
