It’s Christmas On Pandora As Avatar: Fire And Ash Has A Massive Second Weekend At The Box Office

Most modern movies see a quick drop in ticket sales after their opening weekend, but James Cameron’s Avatar films have proven to be different. They start strong, but their real success comes from consistently attracting audiences over many weeks. This happened with the first Avatar, then Avatar: The Way of Water, and now it’s happening again with Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Despite competition from new releases like Anaconda and the wider release of Marty Supreme, the sci-fi hit continued to perform incredibly well in its second weekend in theaters, experiencing only a small drop in ticket sales compared to its opening. See the complete top ten films below, and check back for a more detailed breakdown.

After A Modest Opening Weekend, Avatar: Fire And Ash Remains A Dominant Box Office Force

The opening weekend for Avatar: Fire And Ash wasn’t quite as strong as hoped. Although it easily outperformed other new movies, ticket sales were considerably lower than those of The Way Of Water in 2022. This raised concerns about whether the new film would maintain popularity over time, like its previous installments, and become a major box office success.

Based on the sequel’s performance over the past three days, it seems any previous worries were unfounded.

Following the Christmas holiday on Thursday, audiences in the US and Canada rushed to see Avatar: Fire And Ash again, helping it stay at the top of the box office. The film earned $64 million over the weekend, a slight dip of only 28% from its opening weekend of $89.2 million. After just 10 days, Avatar: Fire And Ash has surpassed $200 million domestically, reaching a total of $217.7 million. This makes it the fifteenth highest-grossing film of 2025 in the region, exceeding the earnings of Zach Cregger’s Weapons ($151.6 million).

I’m absolutely fascinated watching the performance of Avatar 3! It’s incredible – it’s already earning more quickly than the first Avatar did back in 2009. By the time the original had been out for ten days, it had made $212.7 million, and Avatar 3 is surpassing that pace.

As I mentioned last week, while Avatar: Fire And Ash is doing well in the US and Canada, the film is a massive hit internationally. The $217.7 million it’s earned domestically currently makes up only about 28.6% of its total worldwide earnings, which are now at $760.4 million. It’s the overseas audience that really drives the franchise’s success.

Over the past week, the film has surpassed several major 2025 releases in worldwide box office earnings. It has now earned more than Superman ($616.8 million), F1 ($630.6 million), and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon ($636.3 million). Currently the seventh highest-grossing film of the year, behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, it’s predicted to continue climbing the charts and potentially join other billion-dollar hits like Ne Zha 2, Zootopia 2, and Lilo & Stitch.

January is usually a slow month for major movie releases, so most people expect Avatar: Fire And Ash to remain the top film for the first few weeks of 2026. The big question is whether it can reach $2 billion in box office revenue, like the previous Avatar films. I’ll be watching its performance closely over the next month to see if it does.

Zootopia 2 Gets A Nice Boost From The Holidays, Returns To Second Place

Besides Avatar: Fire And Ash, several other new movies opened in theaters last weekend, including David, The Housemaid, and The SpongeBob Movie: Search For Squarepants. These releases caused Zootopia 2 to drop from first to fifth place. However, Zootopia 2 has shown a strong ability to bounce back – just as it did after Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 briefly took the top spot – and continues to perform well.

Last weekend, Zootopia 2 earned $14.8 million, despite playing in 170 fewer theaters. Surprisingly, ticket sales actually increased by 35 percent. Since Friday, the film has added another $20 million to its earnings in the U.S. and Canada, bringing its total to $321.4 million. It has now earned more than Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and is currently the sixth highest-grossing domestic film of 2025. It’s only about $20 million away from surpassing Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good to claim the fifth spot.

Anaconda Barely Places In The Top 5 Despite The Star Power Of Jack Black And Paul Rudd

Several films performed well at the box office this weekend. The Housemaid only experienced a small drop in ticket sales, down just 19 percent from the previous weekend. Marty Supreme also had a strong opening, earning $17.5 million in its first week with wide release. However, the new comedy Anaconda, starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, didn’t quite reach the same heights, debuting at number five and taking in $14.6 million.

The film’s opening wasn’t strong, especially considering it cost around $45 million to make, according to Variety. Critics didn’t love it, and audiences gave it a lukewarm “B” grade, meaning it likely won’t generate a lot of word-of-mouth buzz. While it might still find viewers and gain momentum over time, it’s off to a difficult start.

That concludes my box office reports for 2025. I’ll be back next Sunday to start covering 2026, with continued updates on these films and other new releases. Join me here on TopMob then!
