Gerard Butler is known for starring in action-packed films. He’s battled countless enemies in movies like 300, Law Abiding Citizen, Den of Thieves, and Olympus Has Fallen. A prime example is his 2009 sci-fi thriller, Slayers, where he played a prisoner forced to fight for survival, controlled by a teenager through a futuristic video game.
We’re excited to announce that the sci-fi action movie Gamer, directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (known for Crank and Crank 2: High Voltage), is coming to Peacock on January 1, 2026! Though it’s not a critical darling, Gamer is a wildly over-the-top, violent, and admittedly cheesy action film – which is exactly what makes it so much fun to watch. Fans of Gerard Butler will especially enjoy revisiting this cult favorite.
Also starring Michael C. Hall as the completely unhinged villain, Ken Castle, as well as Logan Lerman, Ludacris, Amber Valletta, Terry Crews, Alison Lohman, John Leguizamo, Sam Witwer, Zoë Bell, and Kyra Sedgwick, Gamer hit theaters on Sept 4, 2009. Unfortunately, the film failed to earn back its $50 million production budget, making just $42 million during its run in cinemas. Panned by critics, it holds just a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from those who called it “undeserved torture,” “incoherent,” and “a big, loud mess.” The official synopsis for Gamer reads:
Kable Butler, who is on death row, fights other prisoners each week in a brutal online game called Slayers. A young gamer controls his actions remotely. Players see Kable and the other inmates as just characters in the game, but a rebel group fighting the game’s creator sees Kable as key to stopping what they believe is a form of high-tech slavery.
‘Gamer’ Is Much Better Than People Think

Lionsgate
Like many action-packed sci-fi thrillers that prioritize violence over a strong plot, Gamer received a mixed reaction from audiences. It currently has a 39% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.7/10 rating on IMDb. While some viewers enjoyed its exploration of themes like reality television, emotional numbness, and personal freedom, others found that weak acting and excessive violence overshadowed an interesting idea.
Okay, so Gamer gets a lot of flak, but honestly, I still think it’s a really fun watch. If you’re just looking for something to switch your brain off and enjoy, I’d definitely recommend giving it a shot, especially if you haven’t seen it before. It might even surprise you and become one of your favorite Gerard Butler films! Someone over on Rotten Tomatoes actually said…
This movie is surprisingly good, even if it’s a bit unusual. Honestly, I enjoyed it more than many highly-rated films I’ve watched.
Look for Gamer to stream on its new home of Peacock starting Jan. 1 2026.
