Why Benedict’s Story Has Been ‘The Easiest’ Bridgerton Book To Adapt, According To The Showrunner

The fourth season of Bridgerton and the new adaptation of An Offer From a Gentleman – Benedict’s story – will arrive with the 2026 TV lineup, and I was already looking forward to them. But hearing the showrunner explain why Benedict’s book was the simplest to adapt has made me even more optimistic about the upcoming season.

The next season of the popular Netflix romance will focus on the story of Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha). It’s based on Julia Quinn’s novel, An Offer From a Gentleman, the third book in the Bridgerton series, and features a storyline similar to Cinderella. According to Jess Brownell, the showrunner, writer, and producer, adapting this book to the screen has been surprisingly straightforward, as she recently shared with EW.

[It’s] the easiest book to adapt.

Let’s quickly recap the show’s story order. Season 1 of Bridgerton was based on the first book, The Duke and I, which focused on Daphne’s romance. Season 2 covered Anthony’s story, The Viscount Who Loved Me, the second book in the series. Season 3 skipped ahead to the fourth book, telling the love story of Colin and Penelope in Romancing Mister Bridgerton. Now, Season 4 will return to the books in order, adapting Benedict’s story from his book, where he falls for a maid named Sophie.

Brownell explained during the interview that adapting Quinn’s third novel has been the most straightforward of all his books to turn into a movie. She went on to share why this was the case.

The story naturally translated well to a television format, especially for a romance. It had many dramatic locations and situations that created compelling conflict and kept the stakes high. Viewers who loved the book should be pleased to see several of those iconic scenes brought to life in the show.

While many factors likely contributed to the ease of adapting the book, this suggests the novel An Offer for a Gentleman offered a clear and visually rich structure for the show. The story is full of memorable scenes, like the popular masquerade ball, which naturally lend themselves to the screen. Having such strong visual moments already built into the source material likely made the writing process much smoother.

As Brownell pointed out, the book’s format works well for television, possibly making it simpler to divide the story into episodes.

Beyond that, Bridgerton is introducing storylines it hasn’t touched on before. For instance, Sophie’s family isn’t wealthy, which will allow the show to explore the interesting social dynamics between the upper and lower classes as her relationship with Benedict develops. The showrunner believes this will bring a fresh perspective to the series, and it was exciting to develop.

It seems the books provided a solid foundation for a fantastic fourth season of Bridgerton. While each season of the show is unique, Season 4 will stand out with its Cinderella-inspired storyline and memorable scenes. Given all of this, it’s understandable why the team found this particular romance the most straightforward to bring to the screen.
