Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, has explained the reason for the shift in the release date of their upcoming HBO show, Lanterns. Originally planned to premiere in early 2026, the series will now debut at the end of summer 2026, as confirmed by HBO’s Casey Bloys.
What is the reason for Lanterns’ delay?
In a recent conversation with CBR, showrunner Safran shared that the team pushed back the release of “Lanterns” to ensure it premieres and is marketed when the time is right.
As a huge movie and TV fan, I was hearing that the release date wasn’t just random. Apparently, the team wanted to make sure it launched at a time when HBO Max could really give it the attention it deserved – the right build-up and promotion, you know? They really believe in this show and want it to be a hit, so getting the timing right was key. It’s landing in late summer, and there’s a good reason behind that decision – they’ve thought it all through.
Aaron Pierre will star as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in the new series. The show features the two actors as intergalactic law enforcement officers investigating a murder in the American Midwest, uncovering a dark mystery along the way. The cast also includes Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Chris Coy, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, and Nicole Ari Parker, among others.
The upcoming series, Lanterns, is led by showrunner Chris Mundy, known for his work on True Detective: Night Country and Ozark. Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen) and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) also serve as executive producers and co-writers. Mundy has stated the show will unfold across multiple time periods. Directing episodes are James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.
