As an analyst with a background in social media and pop culture trends, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of loss upon hearing about the passing of Kabosu, the beloved Shiba Inu who brought joy and inspiration to millions around the world through her iconic “Doge” meme.

The renowned Shiba Inu dog named Kabosu, who gained worldwide fame as the embodiment of the “Doge” meme, tragically passed away on May 24 at the age of eighteen. Her heartfelt owner, Atsuko Sato, a kindergarten teacher in Japan, announced this sad news via Instagram.

In a touching tribute, Sato shared that the widely-adored dog, renowned for her distinctive facial expression and the amusing labels attached to her pictures, had touched the lives of countless people around the globe and came to symbolize the quirky and endearing essence of online culture. Sadly, Kabosu has passed away.

Confirming the news, Dogecoin’s official X handle tweeted,

Today, our cherished and beloved community member Kabosu took her final peaceful breaths, surrounded by the care of her devoted human companion. The profound influence this extraordinary dog has left on the world cannot be quantified. A radiant embodiment of joy and boundless affection, she touched the lives of countless individuals around the globe.

Let her memory and her loved ones remain dear to you. Above all, may she continue to be a part of your journey as her influence on your life endures – we’re all grateful that hers has left such an indelible mark on us.

In 2008, I brought home a new companion whom I fondly named Kabosu, inspired by the roundness of her face that reminded me of the Japanese citrus fruit of the same name.

As a crypto investor, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the amusing meme of Kabosu gave rise to Dogecoin (DOGE) back in 2013. Initially, it started as a lighthearted currency based on internet humor. Now, it holds the distinction of being the globe’s most valuable meme coin by market capitalization.

I’ve witnessed firsthand how DOGE‘s remarkable rise in the crypto world paved the way for an influx of new dog-themed tokens. Among them, Shiba Inu Coin (SHIB) and Floki (FLOKI), have truly made a name for themselves and amassed significant attention from investors like myself.

As a researcher, I came across reports in late December 2022 indicating that Kabosu was gravely unwell due to leukemia. However, it was subsequently disclosed by Sato that her condition had shown signs of improvement not long after receiving the diagnosis.
