Pluribus theory claims Carol has already found the cure but Episode 7 ending ruins it

Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehorn, may have been close to finding a cure for the virus, but the latest episode of Pluribus hints that a solution is now more distant than it seemed.

In the sixth episode, Carol traveled to Las Vegas to share a disturbing revelation with her friend and colleague, Koumba Diabaté: the strange collective intelligence is now using human bodies as a food source.

He not only understood her position, but he went the extra mile and presented a detailed explanation, using a humorous visual aid featuring John Cena. Discouraged, she returns to Albuquerque, but thankfully, her one true friend, Manousos Oviedo, is traveling to find her.

Carol remains unaware of the ongoing situation, and with The Others maintaining their distance, she tries to make the most of her newfound independence in Pluribus Episode 7, ‘The Gap.’ However, the episode ends on a very sad note. Be warned: this contains spoilers!

Pluribus Episode 7 leaves Carol’s potential cure further out of reach

The idea is that Carol might have accidentally discovered a solution to the problem, causing the group to initially avoid her. However, their reappearance at the end of the latest episode suggests they’ve resolved whatever was causing the issue, and now her being alone is enough – she doesn’t need to investigate further at this moment.

A Reddit user, u/davidjung03, first proposed this idea earlier this week. They acknowledged there could be other reasons for the current situation and predicted they might be incorrect, but here’s their theory:

Okay, so everyone’s been wondering why they left, and I really think it wasn’t about needing space or anything dramatic. I think it was pure luck that Zosia actually found a cure! It makes sense when you think about it – she hasn’t been seen since they left, and the show barely mentions her, just a quick line saying she’s alright. It feels like they just wrapped things up quickly because of the cure, and that’s why we haven’t seen her since.

It seems like everyone is avoiding Zosia because she’s become independent and they don’t want her to realize what’s going on. But I could definitely be mistaken.

After being alone for so long, Carol finally breaks down in Episode 7. She paints “come back” on her driveway – a detail a sharp-eyed fan actually spotted on Google Earth – and Zosia returns.

Carol gives her a huge hug, showing the hive mind has broken her spirit.

It’s still possible the theory is correct. Perhaps something went wrong when she used the truth serum on Zosia, especially with all the questioning – it’s similar to what happens with Severance employees during reintegration, where their two selves’ memories blend together.

When she meets Carol again in Episode 7, they might have reunited with Zosia, or Carol could have been nearing a breakthrough on the cure herself. However, it’s also possible the collective intelligence simply recognizes she’s no longer a danger—at least temporarily.

One Reddit user put it well, suggesting that being part of a collective consciousness and then separated would be incredibly isolating. They speculated that if Zosia experienced that separation, she’d feel profoundly alone – perhaps the loneliest person in the world.

Perhaps she decided to reconnect completely after a brief time apart. Additionally, Zosia might have helped The Others understand how to connect with people who were immune.

Someone else explained that Zosia was removed from the group and tried to rejoin. The Others discovered they could use stem cells to achieve this, having already done it to Zosia.

Maybe the group was just steering clear of Carol due to her tendency to get emotional. But honestly, guessing what’s going on with Pluribus is part of what makes it interesting, isn’t it?
