The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will bring together the heroes of the Multiverse Saga, and a particular Marvel TV show will be key to what happens next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earlier this year, Marvel announced that 27 heroes will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and the list included some unexpected faces and noticeable omissions.
Marvel Studios has revealed that this was just a glimpse of the characters appearing in the next big team-up movie, sparking lots of fan speculation about how they’ll all connect and what the story will be. The fact that at least four different groups of heroes are involved seems particularly important.
Besides the Avengers, now led by Captain America (Sam Wilson), we’ll also see teams like The New Avengers (previously known as the Thunderbolts), the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Catching up with these groups beforehand will make the upcoming multiversal battle—and the introduction of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom—even more exciting.
Loki Will Be One Of The Heroes In Avengers: Doomsday
Beyond established superhero teams, many characters operate independently or haven’t joined a team yet. At the end of Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson was just starting to build his new Avengers, and besides Falcon, the lineup was still open to anyone.
As a huge fan, I was so excited at the recent Disney event! It sounds like we’re finally getting a better idea of who’s on which team for Avengers: Doomsday. What really got me buzzing was hearing that Loki – remember, he was the Avengers’ first big bad guy way back in 2012 – will actually be fighting with Sam Wilson’s new team! That’s a twist I definitely didn’t see coming.
Tom Hiddleston will be back as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday, but because of the complicated storyline and Loki’s unique history, it wasn’t clear how he’d appear or which version of the character we’d see.
You Need To Watch Loki To Understand What Happened To Tom Hiddleston’s Character
For viewers who’ve only followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Loki was last seen sacrificing himself in Avengers: Infinity War to try and save the remaining Asgardians from Thanos. He had turned away from his mischievous ways and was trying to do the right thing at the time.
In a shocking scene, Loki tries to kill Thanos but is quickly caught and brutally choked to death. Later, in Avengers: Endgame, Tom Hiddleston reprised his role when the Avengers traveled back in time to the Battle of New York. This time, Loki manages to grab the Space Stone and escape.
The series Loki marks the true beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga. Debuting in 2021, it was the first entry to fully explore the concept of the multiverse, something previous installments hadn’t done. Over two seasons, the show also dramatically transforms Loki into a changed character.
The Loki we see in the show isn’t the original; he’s a version from a different timeline, and therefore, should be removed from existence. However, refusing to accept this fate, he travels to the very end of time, encounters He Who Remains – another version of Kang – and fundamentally alters the structure of the Multiverse.
In the second season of Loki, the character faces the fallout from his choices and those of a close variant. Ultimately, he unlocks new abilities and becomes the God of Stories.
Loki Is Officially The Main Character Of The Multiverse Saga
Over the course of two seasons, Loki transformed from a power-hungry villain into a selfless hero. He ultimately saved the entire multiverse by sacrificing his life and freedom to protect reality and maintain the flow of time.
This action kicks off the entire storyline of the Multiverse Saga, even though some of the later movies don’t quite flow together seamlessly. Because Loki is essentially holding the multiverse from falling apart, he becomes the most crucial character as we head into Avengers: Doomsday.
It appears Doctor Doom is planning to challenge Loki, and Loki will probably need help from his friends to save all realities. This might be why Loki teamed up with Sam Wilson’s Avengers at the recent Disney event in Italy.
To truly understand the impact of his story in Avengers: Doomsday, there’s one Marvel series on Disney+ you really need to watch: Loki. Luckily, it’s one of the best shows the MCU has ever made, and well worth your time.
