God of War TV show enters pre-production, begins casting, adds award-winning director

Exciting news for fans of the God of War video game series! According to a new report from Deadline, the live-action TV show is officially moving forward. Production is in the early stages – they’ve begun casting actors and have a director lined up for the first two episodes. This adaptation follows the success of The Last of Us and has been in development for quite some time. The recent God of War games, especially 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok, are critically acclaimed as some of the greatest single-player adventures ever made. Some viewers even believe the action sequences are so impressive they could be directly lifted for a film. While it’s still early days, this is a positive step for the show and a reason to be optimistic.

God of War TV show enters pre-production, casting begins, and adds an award-winning director

Deadline reports that the highly anticipated God of War TV series is officially moving into pre-production, with Amazon already greenlighting it for at least two seasons. Casting is the next big step, and fans on Reddit are already sharing their dream picks. Many overwhelmingly support Christopher Judge, who brilliantly voiced Kratos in the recent games, with some stating they can’t picture anyone else in the role. While there’s been playful talk of casting Chris Pratt, Dwayne Johnson, and Jason Mantzoukas, more serious suggestions have emerged, including Gerard Butler (known for 300) and Alan Ritchson (Reacher). One fan even joked about a Kratos and Atreus duo of Chris Pratt and Tom Holland.

I was so excited to read that Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes! You might not recognize the name, but trust me, this is huge news. He directed four episodes of Shogun, which was incredible, and even won an Emmy for his work on it. Plus, he’s done episodes of Fallout, the new show based on the video game that everyone’s talking about. Seriously, the guy has a fantastic resume – he’s also worked on shows like Lost, American Gods, The Walking Dead, Westworld, and Watchmen! I’m already feeling even more optimistic about this series knowing he’s involved.

One of the biggest questions surrounding this series is which story from the God of War games it will tell. Recent reports say they’ve started casting actors for Kratos and Atreus, which suggests the show might focus on the story from the 2018 game made by Sony Santa Monica. But the God of War franchise has a much larger history than just the last two games, so it will be fascinating to see how the showrunners choose to adapt the overall narrative.

While there’s still a lot of work to be done to make the God of War show a hit, this is a promising beginning. Because the show is only starting pre-production now, don’t expect news about who’s been cast or when it might be released for quite a while. It’s going to take some time, so patience is important.
