YouTube is experimenting with a feature to fix a common problem: getting unwanted video recommendations after only briefly watching something. This happens when the platform thinks you’re interested in a topic, even if you’re not.
We’ve all been there: you click on one interesting video, and suddenly your recommendations are filled with similar content you didn’t ask for. Watch one chess video, and your feed becomes all chess, all the time. Watch a police bodycam clip, and you’re quickly bombarded with true crime videos.
YouTube’s recommendation system is often criticized for making mistakes, like showing the same videos over and over, or thinking you’re suddenly interested in topics you’re not.
YouTube is now trying out a new feature called “Your Custom Feed” that allows users to personalize the videos recommended to them.

Google is testing a new feature where some users will see a “Your Custom Feed” option next to the “Home” button. Tapping this option will open a box where you can tell the AI exactly what kind of content you’d like to see.
YouTube now lets you easily customize your Home feed. Just tell it things like “show me less of this creator” or “I want to see more videos like that,” and it will adjust the videos you see accordingly.
The platform explained that this new feature lets you easily manage the content it suggests to you. They encourage you to try it out and let them know what you think.
YouTube is taking an unusual step to show how its recommendation system works, a system that has often been criticized for being random, showing the same videos repeatedly, or just being generally confusing.
YouTube is trying out a few new things, including bringing back direct messaging – a feature it removed six years ago. Currently, this messaging feature is only being tested in Ireland and Poland. They’re also working on a personalized feed for users.
This new customization feature has the potential to be one of the most useful improvements YouTube has made in a long time if it’s released to everyone.
