The latest episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ is getting fans excited about a Stephen King movie adaptation – but it’s not ‘It’ that’s currently capturing their attention.
This horror series has dedicated a lot of time to building the history of the cursed town, drawing on details from Stephen King’s novel to explain Pennywise’s strong connection to Derry. The show has added to Pennywise’s backstory and given Lily and her friends a potential way to defeat the creature, but we already know from the ‘It’ movies that he won’t be permanently destroyed and will return for another cycle of terror.
Despite these challenges, director Andy Muschietti hasn’t held back on the horror, delivering some genuinely disturbing moments. The film also clearly connects to the larger story world, notably featuring a significant role for Dick Hallorann (played by Chris Chalk) from ‘The Shining’, who is crucial to solving the mystery.
The fifth episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ sheds light on the extent of Hallorann’s psychic powers, and it’s led many viewers to revisit another one of Stephen King’s popular film adaptations – surprisingly, it’s not ‘The Shining’.
It: Welcome to Derry fans are rewatching Doctor Sleep

In the fifth episode, Hallorann experiences disturbing visions of his grandmother, who urges him to suppress painful memories and frightening experiences. However, while exploring the sewers with the military, Pennywise invades Hallorann’s mind, posing as his grandfather to unlock this mental ‘box’ and unleash even more trauma.
If this discussion of mental powers and extraordinary abilities seems reminiscent of Stephen King’s stories, particularly the 2019 film Doctor Sleep, you’re not alone. Many fans will recognize these themes.
The movie centers on Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) and his struggle to come to terms with the trauma his father, Jack Torrance, experienced when he went insane at the Overlook Hotel.
In the film, the character Hallorann shows Danny how to mentally trap harmful ghosts in imaginary boxes, a skill that mirrors a story Hallorann tells in the fifth episode of “Welcome to Derry.”

Viewers on X (formerly Twitter) are excited about the links between the new series, ‘Welcome to Derry,’ and the films ‘The Shining’ and ‘Doctor Sleep.’ One fan urged anyone watching the series to also watch those movies, and many are now wondering about the mystery surrounding a box belonging to the character Hallorann.
Another wrote: “Doctor Sleep was good! Now I see how it ties into Welcome to Derry!”
One viewer commented that after seeing Doctor Sleep, the It miniseries, Welcome to Derry, really clicked and felt like a well-developed world.
As a huge Stephen King fan, I’m really loving how Muschietti is subtly connecting bits and pieces from all his different stories in the new ‘Welcome to Derry’ project. It adds a lot to the world without feeling like it has to be about other books or movies, you know? It’s just a smart way to build everything out.
