I remember when Norman Reedus first showed up on The Walking Dead back in 2010. He’d done some great work in The Boondock Saints years before, but at the time, that’s what most people knew him for. Interestingly, Daryl wasn’t even supposed to be a major character – he didn’t exist in the original comics! But honestly, it’s Norman’s incredible performance that really made Daryl into the fan favorite he is today. He just organically grew into one of the most beloved survivors on the show.
As The Walking Dead continued, Daryl became an increasingly important character, especially after Andrew Lincoln left the show in season 9. Norman Reedus then led his own series, Daryl Dixon, which has aired for three seasons with a fourth one planned. However, after 15 years of playing Daryl and fighting zombies, Reedus may be stepping away from the role.
No Further The Walking Dead Projects Featuring Norman Reedus Have Been Confirmed
Norman Reedus shared a farewell message on November 20, 2025, marking the end of filming for season 4 of Daryl Dixon. This season will be the last for his spin-off series, and it’s one of just two remaining shows from The Walking Dead universe, alongside the upcoming third season of Dead City.
What happens with The Walking Dead after these next releases is still unclear, and since Daryl won’t be joining Maggie and Negan in New York, it seems likely that Norman Reedus has finished playing Daryl Dixon.
Norman Reedus’ recent tweet seemed more emotional than a typical post announcing the end of filming for a season. His heartfelt thanks and reflection on playing the character for so long strongly suggest he might be saying goodbye to Daryl Dixon.
What Needs To Happen In Daryl Dixon Season 4 To End Daryl’s Story
To give Daryl Dixon a satisfying conclusion and wrap up Norman Reedus’ time on The Walking Dead, a few key things need to occur. Most importantly, Daryl and Carol need to finally make it back home to their friends in Alexandria and the Commonwealth. After getting so close in the final episode of Daryl Dixon season 3, it’s likely this will happen in the next installment.
Ideally, the show’s conclusion should allow for one last appearance by Louis Puech Scigliuzzi as Laurent. While viewers need to know that Laurent and Ash made it to the United States safely, seeing Daryl and Laurent together again would provide a satisfying emotional resolution to their relationship as father and son.
While it might be a bit of a stretch, season four of Daryl Dixon really needs to bring Rick Grimes and Daryl together again. Considering how determined Daryl was to find Rick, he deserves to finally be reunited with him, and fans have been waiting long enough to see it happen.
Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, seems to have moved past the potential romance between Daryl and Connie that was suggested in the later seasons of The Walking Dead, introducing a new love interest for his character. Because that storyline was dropped so suddenly, many viewers would be happy if the fourth season of Daryl Dixon included even a small indication that Daryl and Connie might reconnect.
If the final episodes featuring Daryl Dixon successfully include everything fans are hoping for, it’s possible that Norman Reedus has finished filming his role in The Walking Dead.
Why Daryl Dixon Season 4 Likely WON’T Be The Last Time We See Norman Reedus In The Walking Dead
Norman Reedus’ recent tweet suggests he might be finishing with his character, Daryl Dixon, but he doesn’t say it directly. Although there are no current plans for future projects, he hints that Daryl could return after his new show ends, a possibility he also mentioned in an interview with Variety last July.
When you consider the entire story of The Walking Dead, it’s clear that Daryl Dixon’s journey isn’t over yet.
While the upcoming season 4 of Daryl Dixon could wrap up his individual story, The Walking Dead universe still has many unresolved plotlines planned for the future. These include mysteries like the origins of the virus, the Variants, Designation 2, the PPP, and the 14-year lifespan limit. Because these storylines are so complex and have big implications, they’re best explored in either the final season of The Walking Dead (season 12) or in a larger crossover event.
For years, fans have been talking about the possibility of a crossover between different shows in The Walking Dead universe, and the show’s creative leader, Scott M. Gimple, has encouraged the idea. With so much story still to tell in The Walking Dead, and Daryl’s character remaining incredibly popular, it’s clear that Norman Reedus would be essential to any such event. A crossover simply wouldn’t feel complete without him.
If the possibility still exists, Norman Reedus will probably continue filming as Daryl Dixon within the growing world of The Walking Dead.
