Be warned – spoilers ahead for the first three episodes of Bel-Air season 4! Showrunner Carla Banks-Waddles has explained the unexpected departure of Coco Jones, who plays Hilary Banks. In the season 4 premiere, Hilary left Bel-Air for Costa Rica, following in the footsteps of the late Lamarcus, who had been doing humanitarian work there through his foundation.
In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Banks-Waddles explained that Hilary’s departure from Bel-Air in season 4 was partly due to Coco Jones’ demanding schedule as both an actress and musician. Jones simply didn’t have enough availability to commit to a major role throughout the final season. However, Banks-Waddles confirmed that Jones will return for the show’s concluding episodes and have a more significant part in them.
Hilary will continue to be an important character this season, and you’ll see her throughout the episodes. Coco Jones, who is a successful and Grammy-winning musician, had a busy schedule, so we worked around it – and we were happy to! We fully support her pursuing her goals, and she was dedicated to appearing on the show whenever possible, so we made it work.
Hilary will likely play a significant role as the season progresses, so it’s too soon to count her out!
Hilary’s departure from Bel-Air happens after the death of her husband. She feels responsible for his passing, which motivates her to move to Costa Rica. This storyline conveniently accommodates actress Kyla-Rose Jones’ schedule and also feels true to her character’s journey.
I was relieved to hear earlier that actress Jones would be back for more episodes of Bel-Air, even though her character’s departure felt a little sad. We get a sweet scene in episode 3 where she FaceTimes with Viv and explains she won’t be home for Thanksgiving, but it’s clear this isn’t a permanent goodbye. It seems like we haven’t seen the last of her, which is good news for fans like me!
Other conflicts are also developing that could draw her in, like Carlton and Will working to fix their past mistakes to improve their college prospects, Viv’s pregnancy, and a possible, careful agreement between Uncle Phil and Geoffrey. As the show nears its end, these stories will likely connect and build on each other.
Hilary’s storyline will center on her recovery after the events involving Lamarcus, and her journey to find hope amidst grief. As the drama in Bel-Air builds to a climax, it appears Jones’ character has an opportunity to turn her difficult experiences into something meaningful.
Now that season 4 of Bel-Air has just started, Hilary will still appear in the remaining five episodes, though she won’t be as central to the plot as she was before. Even with a smaller role, she’ll continue to be a significant part of the show, and viewers won’t know what ultimately happens to her until the very end of the series.
New episodes of Bel-Air season 4 arrive Mondays on Peacock.
