James Gunn quickly announced a sequel to Superman, which thrilled me – it was one of my top films of 2025! I have really high hopes for Superman: Man of Tomorrow, especially after seeing fan art of Matt Smith (known for Doctor Who) as Brainiac. I’m really hoping he’ll play the villain in the movie – I think he’d be perfect!
While we don’t even know with certainty that Brainiac is the big bad of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, I’m already convinced we need Matt Smith to play the villain. That’s after seeing this fan art from @horrific.heroics, which can be found below:

It’s surprising to picture him without hair, especially after seeing his roles in Caught Stealing and House of the Dragon, but I actually think it works well. While John Smith has a very recognizable face, even with makeup and prosthetics, Brainiac’s appearance has changed so much over the years in comics and on TV that, visually, almost any actor could potentially play the part.
James Gunn recently talked about how his upcoming film, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ will present a different take on Superman. However, it was his ideas for the future of Lex Luthor that really got people excited.
James Gunn probably isn’t choosing actors for his new DC films based on appearance alone. If you want evidence Matt Smith could convincingly play a smart, calculating villain, consider his performances in popular TV shows. Watching him as Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon – which has been renewed for a fourth season – skillfully manipulate both allies and opponents clearly demonstrates he’s capable of taking on a role like Brainiac.
As a fan of Doctor Who, I think Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor was particularly strong and even a little intimidating. Although the Doctor usually prefers to solve problems with kindness and negotiation, his immense age and experience meant he was a powerful figure, ready to confront anyone who threatened the innocent. It’s no surprise that many fans still consider Smith to be the best Doctor!
Despite a lot of rumors, it’s still unknown if Brainiac will be in Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Some fans have speculated that Chukwudi Iwuji might play the role, given his working relationship with James Gunn, and that would be great. However, I personally think Matt Smith would be perfect as Superman’s next major villain.
