The situation at Rockstar Games, the company behind the delayed Grand Theft Auto 6, continues to unfold. Over 30 employees in the UK were recently fired for what the company called “gross misconduct.” This led to accusations of union-busting from former employees and union representatives. The firings have caused low morale, protests across Europe, and an open letter signed by over 200 current Rockstar employees who are asking for their colleagues to be reinstated. New information has emerged, shared by People Make Games, detailing the messages exchanged on a Discord server that Rockstar cites as evidence of the alleged misconduct.
Report reveals details about the messages that may have led to firing of Rockstar employees
A recent video from the channel People Make Games reveals new information reportedly shared by a Rockstar insider. The video details discussions that took place on a Discord server run by union organizers, where interested Rockstar employees could connect. According to the report, employees discussed their salaries – a legally protected topic in the UK – and voiced concerns about a recent removal of various chat channels on Rockstar’s Slack server, which the company called a “purge.” I highly recommend watching the 16-minute video for the full story.
Rockstar Games may have considered the leak of information about their Slack policy changes to be a serious offense. Employees reportedly shared quotes from internal memos and even a full email on Discord detailing the new rules. These changes, referred to as a “purge,” involved removing non-work channels from Slack – spaces where employees chatted about hobbies like video games, pets, movies, and TV. According to a company email, these channels were eliminated because they were seen as distracting or potentially fostering inappropriate behavior.
Employees discussed the new policy in a Discord server, questioning the reasoning behind it. One fired employee asked to see proof that remote work was significantly hurting productivity, adding that the change seemed likely to severely damage morale. Another pointed out the timing of the announcement – it was sent out after most UK-based employees had finished work for the day. This was significant because Rockstar recently implemented a rule requiring employees to access work emails only from the office, due to past leaks. Sending the policy change so late meant many couldn’t see it until the next day. One employee expressed frustration, suggesting that the return-to-office push, framed as a way to build community, felt forced and one-sided.
People Make Games contacted Rockstar regarding the recent screenshots and messages, asking if they were related to the previously mentioned “gross misconduct.” However, Rockstar refused to provide any additional information beyond their initial comments.
Honestly, the gaming community is not pleased with Rockstar right now, especially after everything that’s come out. I’ve been reading the comments on the YouTube video, and one of the top ones pretty much sums it up: it feels like they’re punishing someone for leaking an internal email about keeping the break room clean! It’s such a small thing, and if that’s the main reason Rockstar is going after them, it’s seriously embarrassing. A lot of people are calling it union busting, and it seems like Rockstar is using a tiny technicality to get rid of key people involved with the union.
We haven’t confirmed whether the messages were the main reason for the employee firings. Rockstar hasn’t shared many details, but employees and their union are speaking out. We’ll need to follow this situation closely for updates in the coming days and weeks.
