Vecna, the main villain in Stranger Things – previously known as Henry Creel – is nearing the climax of his plan as the show’s fifth season begins. Many viewers have noticed strong similarities between Vecna and Lord Voldemort, suggesting a comparable evil force.
Stranger Things openly draws inspiration from classic 80s movies and stories, with clear references to films like ET, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing, The Goonies, Scanners, and It.
As fans learn more about Vecna, the main villain, they’re starting to see strong parallels between him and Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series.
Here’s how Vecna mirrors the role of a dark wizard like Voldemort, and why Will Byers shares similarities with Harry Potter in the show.
Gifted children who turn on humanity

Before turning evil, both Voldemort and Vecna were remarkably perceptive and talented children. However, they also had a cruel side, demonstrated by their habit of harming animals.
Voldemort was once Tom Riddle, a young wizard who became fascinated with dark magic and tormented other students at Hogwarts. Similarly, Vecna was known as Henry Creel, who controlled and harmed his family while also testing the limits of his abilities.
Feeling misunderstood, both Riddle and Henry refused to accept the limitations of being human. Riddle turned to magic to escape death, while Henry used his abilities to overcome what he saw as the weakness of emotions.
Monstrous Metamorphoses

Vecna and Voldemort don’t become villains by chance or because of external pressures – they actively choose that path. This internal shift quickly manifests physically, as they transform in ways that mirror their growing inner corruption.
By splitting his soul into Horcruxes, Voldemort gradually loses his human qualities, becoming increasingly monstrous and snake-like.
Henry Creel’s anger transforms him into a monstrous figure in the Upside Down, resembling the Dark Lord and appearing physically disfigured.
Fighting psychological warfare

In both stories, the villains initially attack their victims’ minds before attempting to control the world around them, essentially changing who those people are from the inside out.
Voldemort can invade people’s minds using Legilimency, creating frightening illusions and turning their dreams into nightmares.
Vecna connects with the minds of children in Hawkins, using their painful memories and past trauma to make them vulnerable before ultimately controlling them.
Building armies of the lost and vulnerable

I’ve noticed something really interesting when comparing these two stories – both have big wars coming, and the bad guys in each one are building their armies in a similar way. It’s almost like they’re running a cult, attracting followers and growing their power base bit by bit. They don’t just raise an army, they collect people, which is a really creepy and effective tactic!
Voldemort gathers followers by appealing to those who feel angry, lost, or crave control. His Death Eaters aren’t inherently evil, but ordinary people he manages to influence.
Vecna preys on people in Hawkins who are struggling with trauma, loneliness, or pain, using their negative emotions to manipulate and control them.
Reshaping the world

Okay, so thinking about Voldemort and Vecna, it’s kinda creepy how they both want to ‘fix’ the world, but really they just want to rebuild it to match their vision. It’s like, they’re not trying to improve things, they’re trying to impose their own order, and it’s seriously messed up.
Voldemort believes strongly in the idea of pure bloodlines, and his prejudiced beliefs lead him to want a world ruled only by wizards he deems superior.
Vecna is trying to destroy the boundary between Hawkins and the Upside Down, with the goal of reshaping reality to fit his twisted vision.
A dark connection to the light
The relationship between Voldemort and Harry Potter is similar to the one between Vecna and Will Byers. Both boys experience a sense of loneliness because of a mysterious curse that others can’t comprehend.
Harry’s link to Voldemort begins when Voldemort attempts to kill him, and the resulting scar allows Harry to experience the Dark Lord’s feelings, thoughts, and intentions.
As shown in the Season 5 clip, Will is possessed by the Mind Flayer, which allows him to feel Vecna’s presence and understand what Vecna is planning.
Like Harry Potter facing Voldemort, Will Byers is now central to the emotional core of Stranger Things and may hold the key to defeating Vecna. When the series concludes on New Year’s Eve, the final confrontation won’t be a straightforward battle, but a climactic collision between two opposing forces that have been building throughout the entire story.
