„It’s best for the fans” Resident Evil Requiem producer on return to Raccoon City

In a recent Well Played interview, Masato Kumazawa, the producer of Resident Evil Requiem, discussed the decision to bring the series back to Raccoon City. It’s been over 20 years – since Resident Evil Outbreak in 2003 – since players have explored this iconic location. Resident Evil Requiem is set to change that on February 27th, 2026, and Kumazawa explained that revisiting Raccoon City is what fans want most.

Resident Evil Requiem producer says returning to Raccoon City is “best for the fans.”

During the interview, Kumazawa explained that recent Resident Evil games, like 7 and Village, moved away from the original setting of Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation. He believes returning to these roots is what fans want, allowing them to experience and learn more about the events that first defined the series. It sounds like the development team felt it was the right time to revisit the iconic location and expand on its history.

Now that the story is returning to Raccoon City, fans are eager to know if familiar faces will reappear. Leon Kennedy, the popular hero of Resident Evil 2, is top of mind for many. While producer Kumazawa wouldn’t reveal any details and cautioned against getting too excited, he did confirm that characters from previous games will be included. Specifically, when asked about characters from Resident Evil Outbreak, he hinted at their appearance, saying that those involved in the Raccoon City incident will play a role. This makes sense considering the new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from Outbreak. We’ll have to wait for more announcements to find out exactly who else might show up.

I was really hoping to hear about a potential remake of Outbreak, or at least a new game like it, so I was glad Kumazawa addressed it. He said he’d love to make one eventually, but there are no plans for it right now. It’s a bit disappointing, but he did add that if enough fans really want another co-op Resident Evil experience like Outbreak, they might consider it. Basically, we need to let Capcom know we’re still interested if we want to see it happen!
