As the days grow shorter and a coldness sets in, with holiday lights appearing and the scent of pine in the air, actor Kevin Spacey has once again emerged with a new project. He has a history of making appearances around the holidays, usually through strange social media posts, and this year it’s to promote a live show called Kevin Spacey: Songs & Stories. He’s been trying to tour with it, but so far has only performed in Cyprus, mostly for audiences of real-estate developers. The show itself is filled with nostalgic music and stories from his youth, a fitting approach considering the accusations of sexual assault made by over 50 men eight years ago. With each performance and award he receives, especially in Europe, Spacey seems increasingly determined to prove he still matters.
Two years after being found not guilty on nine sexual assault charges in the UK, Kevin Spacey has largely been shut out of Hollywood. He’s been working primarily in smaller, Mediterranean markets, often appearing in crime films. Despite this, Spacey recently told The Telegraph he believes influential figures in the industry want to see him return to work. He feels a single call from a director like Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino would be enough to revive his career, saying he’d be “incredibly honored and delighted” to receive such an offer, and that he thinks it will happen. While he may be right that a call from either director could change things, the fact that hasn’t happened yet is significant.
Despite his apparent confidence, things aren’t going well for him. He recently told The Telegraph he doesn’t have a permanent home. He’d hoped to perform in both Athens and Tel Aviv, but canceled the Athens show because he prioritized Tel Aviv. He explained he’d like to perform in Athens once the city is more open to allowing artists to perform freely. Instead of waiting for director Quentin Tarantino to reach out, he hopes to connect with him if he makes it to Tel Aviv. Like his current show, which focuses on music and stories from the past, he draws inspiration from figures like blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and actor Jack Lemmon – both iconic men who are no longer alive. He feels like a man out of time, someone who belongs to the past but is living in the present.
