James Gunn, who leads DC Studios, recently revealed high-resolution images of the logo, tagline, and artwork for a popular Superman villain. Gunn’s revamped DC Universe was first shown on the big screen this summer with the new Superman movie. The film featured several dangerous villains challenging the Man of Steel, including Lex Luthor, a giant version of Ultraman, and Vasil Ghurkos, the villainous president of Boravia.
James Gunn, the director of the upcoming Superman movie, recently gave fans a closer look at one of the film’s villains. He shared behind-the-scenes artwork on X (formerly Twitter) featuring Zlatko Burić as Vasil Ghurkos.
These pictures were shared with the description, “Bits and pieces from the Boravian palace,” and included the official logo and motto of their intimidating enemy, along with a surprisingly funny portrait.
The first picture showed a villain from Superman riding a horse and holding a tiny squirrel. The depiction of the Boravian president seems to be inspired by traditional portraits of leaders throughout history.

The upcoming reveal will feature the official crest and motto of Boravia. The motto, “Sciurus Non Servi,” is a Latin phrase that continues the squirrel theme, meaning “The Squirrel Does Not Serve.”
The crest features two squirrels facing each other, each holding an acorn, with the Boravian castle visible in the background.

Finally, Gun revealed another official logo for the main villain in the Superman story, featuring the phrase “Domovina ujedinjena u pobjedi.” This is Boravia’s national motto in the comics, which means “Homeland united in victory.”
The Boravian president now has a new logo: two squirrels facing away from each other, with the national crest underneath.

Vasil Ghurkos won’t be appearing in Superman 2 because his character was killed off in Superman by Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl in a dramatic scene.
I finally got to watch the new Superman movie, and it’s now available on HBO Max! It’s directed by the person behind Guardians of the Galaxy, and David Corenswet does a great job as the Man of Steel. The story follows Superman as he battles Lex Luthor – Nicholas Hoult plays him – who really doesn’t like people with superpowers.
James Gunn, who wrote and directed the 2025 hit Superman: Man of Tomorrow, is set to continue the story in a new sequel. The follow-up film is currently planned for release in theaters on July 9, 2027.
Will Vasil Ghurkos Ever Return to the DCU?

It’s notable that James Gunn is focusing on Vasil Ghurkos right now, especially since his role in future films seems limited. This Superman villain is one of the few major antagonists introduced and killed off in the same movie.
Lex Luthor and The Engineer survived, but Vasil wasn’t so lucky – Hawkgirl, a member of the Justice Gang, dropped him from a great height. Despite this, Vasil’s impact on the overall story isn’t over. The success Superman and the Justice Gang had fighting in Jarhanpur will likely be important again in future DC stories.
Although Boravia no longer poses a threat, Lex Luthor – the brilliant and dangerous villain who joined forces with Vasil to invade – remains at large. Now imprisoned, Lex will have to work with Superman in the upcoming story, Man of Tomorrow, to defeat a new enemy, likely Brainiac.
Given their last disastrous encounter, where Lex’s schemes crumbled, this new collaboration probably won’t be smooth sailing.
There’s a possibility Vasil could reappear in the new DC Universe. James Gunn has stated the DCU will sometimes move around in time, which opens the door for bringing back characters who died in Superman, potentially through prequel projects.
