The upcoming movie Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could feature a well-loved villain from the franchise. The MonsterVerse, which includes films like 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has become a very successful series of interconnected films. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will be the third film in this current storyline and the sixth overall MonsterVerse movie, and it’s scheduled to be released in theaters on March 26, 2027.
With fans buzzing about Hedorah potentially being the big bad in Toho’s Godzilla: Minus One, many are also curious about what will bring Godzilla and Kong together to fight in the MonsterVerse. The MonsterVerse movies have already featured classic Godzilla enemies like King Ghidorah, Rodan, and MechaGodzilla, alongside the ally Mothra. After battling new monsters – The Scar King and Shimo – in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the next film will likely introduce another powerful foe from the original Toho series. The rumored title, “Supernova,” hints at a threat from outer space, and this could point to SpaceGodzilla as the villain.
Who is SpaceGodzilla?

Toho
SpaceGodzilla is different from most of the monsters appearing in the MonsterVerse films. While many are from the original Godzilla series (1954-1975), SpaceGodzilla first appeared much later, in 1994’s Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. This film was near the end of a reboot series that ran from 1984 to 1995. SpaceGodzilla was one of only four brand-new monsters created during that period, along with Biollante, Destoroyah, and the evil Mothra counterpart, Batra. The rest of the films in that era largely featured classic Godzilla enemies like King Ghidorah, Rodan, Mothra, and MechaGodzilla – much like the MonsterVerse movies do.
SpaceGodzilla is born when some of Godzilla’s cells travel into space and undergo a bizarre transformation. They fall into a black hole, then reappear through a white hole, picking up crystalline lifeforms along the way and rapidly evolving into SpaceGodzilla. The movie doesn’t explicitly explain how Godzilla’s cells ended up in space, but suggests two possibilities. One is that Mothra carried them into space during the final battle in Godzilla vs. Mothra. The other is that spores from Biollante, which also contained Godzilla’s cells due to being a hybrid creature, were launched into space after the events of Godzilla vs. Biollante. SpaceGodzilla possesses all of Godzilla’s abilities, plus a unique power: the crystals on its back can absorb energy.
Even though SpaceGodzilla only appeared in one movie, he quickly became one of Godzilla’s most recognizable enemies. His unique and striking design – a darker version of Godzilla with two large crystals on his back – made him a popular character for toys and other merchandise. He’s also been featured in several video games, including Godzilla: Save the Earth (2004) and Godzilla: Unleashed (2005). Many fans believe SpaceGodzilla would be a perfect powerful villain to bring Godzilla and Kong together, and hints about his possible appearance may have already been included in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
How SpaceGodzilla Could Factor into The MonsterVerse

Warner Bros.
During the final battle of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla uses a huge blast of atomic breath to melt the ice created by Shimo, who was controlled by the Scar King. Because the blast was directed upwards, it potentially reached Earth’s atmosphere and even outer space. Godzilla was especially powerful in this moment, having absorbed energy from the titan Tiamat and a lot of radiation from the sun. This extra energy, released into space, could explain how SpaceGodzilla might appear in a future film. Since Godzilla’s power came from the sun, SpaceGodzilla could be a being fueled by solar energy, like a supernova – which fits with the movie’s title.
The movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduced the Iwi, a tribe living in Hollow Earth who can control gravity and their surroundings using crystals. Godzilla: King of the Monsters revealed that King Ghidorah was an alien, establishing that aliens exist in this universe. This raises the question: could these Hollow Earth crystals be evidence of ancient alien contact with Earth? It’s possible they’re even connected to the origins of SpaceGodzilla.
SpaceGodzilla is a popular character who immediately grabs attention and adds excitement to action sequences. He’s presented as a powerful enemy capable of challenging Godzilla, Kong, and their allies – including Mothra, Shimo, and Suko, who is the MonsterVerse version of the Son of Kong. This raises the question of whether we’ll see a young Godzilla character like Minilla or Godzilla Junior appear, as Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla featured Godzilla Junior. Given that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire focuses on Kong and introduces a younger Kong, it would make sense for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova to do something similar for Godzilla, perhaps by introducing a young Godzilla character or a counterpart to him.
