NCIS: Origins Star Talks Aftermath Of Randy And Franks’ Fight, And Why Those Kinds Of Stories Are What Keeps The Franchise Going

Be warned: the following contains spoilers for the sixth episode of NCIS: Origins Season 2, titled “Happy Birthday.” You can watch it now with a Paramount+ subscription.

The newest episode of NCIS: Origins explored Randy’s past in more detail, but it wasn’t a pleasant experience for him. A significant argument between Randy (Caleb Foote) and Franks (Kyle Schmid) took place, resulting in Franks breaking a computer in anger. Foote later discussed the impact of the fight and why these kinds of stories are crucial for the show’s overall narrative.

This week on the show, titled “Happy Birthday,” the team investigates a case that reminds Randy of one he was working on while converting old files to digital format. Meanwhile, Franks, still struggling with issues with his brother, gets frustrated with Randy’s reliance on his computer and angrily breaks it. Despite this, Randy remains optimistic and even forgives Franks, writing him a note offering a hug the next day. According to actor Foote, this positive reaction is simply Randy’s nature.

That’s just his personality – he’s always been that way, and it’s wonderful to play a character like him. There will definitely be dramatic moments, like when my character was both physically fighting and emotionally vulnerable in Episode 8 last season. Things are going to get intense, but Randy remains a source of humor and stability, which is important. I even spoke with a friend who has special forces experience, and they confirmed that even in stressful situations, people often use humor to cope.

Even after just two seasons, viewers have gotten to know Randy as a flexible character, but it’s also compelling to see his vulnerabilities and learn about his background. While his fight with Franks was significant, Randy handled the situation impressively, as we’ve seen. Despite dealing with difficult cases and conflicts, he’s managed to stay positive, which really highlights his strong character.

Many characters across the NCIS franchise have struggled to find that balance, and according to Foote, that’s a key reason why the show has remained popular for so long. He went on to explain:

The key to staying grounded, especially during tough times, is finding things that bring you peace and happiness. Simply focusing on the current case isn’t enough – it’s the connections with others and moments of joy that really matter. That’s why NCIS has remained successful for over 23 seasons: it prioritizes the relationships between characters alongside the weekly investigations.

Fans of NCIS know the show can get serious and intense, but it also knows how to keep things funny and lighthearted. Randy definitely brings that lightness to Origins, especially after what happened to Lala. He seems pretty resilient – even a disagreement with Franks and a broken computer haven’t gotten him down. It makes you wonder what could finally get to him.

Randy’s moved past what happened with Franks and their relationship is likely to improve in the next episode. While he hasn’t completely forgotten, Randy understands Franks’ character and simply wants to make him and the team happy.

It seems like Randy did the right thing by letting it go. On a show like this, things always come back around, and revisiting past issues can be really satisfying for viewers. Randy didn’t initially handle things with grace, but he understands his boss is a good person and ultimately forgave him. He realized his boss is a great detective who was just trying to do his job and support the team, even if he made a mistake. In the end, Randy accepted that and moved forward.

Since Herm (Daniel Bellomy) got Randy a new computer, and Franks helped get it set up, Randy is sure to be thrilled when he gets to work and sees it. Though viewers won’t see this kindness directly, Foote mentioned the team members clearly care about each other, and that’s the most important part of the show as it delves into Gibbs’ past.
