In the game Wuthering Waves, it’s quite easy to overlook intricate details due to the abundance of characters and factions intertwined within the storyline. It’s possible you may have missed significant lore or even misinterpreted some parts altogether. This is partly because Kuro Games, the developers, tend to include lengthy descriptions or complex lore that is hidden in item descriptions, which many players might not bother to read. Additionally, the use of numerous pronouns in cutscenes can make it challenging to follow what’s happening.
Despite listing some lesser-known or misinterpreted details about the story, not all points on this list have significant impact on the current narrative. However, these tidbits could prove valuable for future events. Please be aware, delving into the story’s details might reveal information some might view as sensitive.
1) The Shorekeeper Isnāt Human
In the narrative of “Wuthering Waves” known as the Black Shores arc, the Shorekeeper stands side by side with Camellya as one of the primary characters. Upon your arrival at the Black Shores, she warmly welcomes you, evidently thrilled to see you. She expresses her elation over the resurfacing of the Astral Modulator, a role that was previously Rover’s before the happenings in “Wuthering Waves.” As the tale progresses, it is disclosed that Rover is not only the Astral Modulator but also the inventor of the Black Shores and, consequently, the Shorekeeper herself.
From what can be observed, the Shorekeeper appears similar to any other Resonator you’ve come across. She communicates when she chooses to do so. She exhibits signs of emotion, and during her interaction with Rover, she even learns to express feelings like love or affection. However, it’s important to note that the Shorekeeper is not human. Instead, she’s an artificially intelligent being engineered to interface with the Tethys System – a supercomputer that doesn’t seem to require any visible energy source and appears capable of storing infinite amounts of data. The purpose of this system is to mitigate the effects of the Lament disaster. When Rover isn’t in Black Shores, the Shorekeeper takes over all operations to maintain smooth functioning of everything.
2) Resonator Links Can Exist Between Sentinels and Threnodians
In the narrative of “Wuthering Waves”, both Sentinels and Threnodians possess a unique conduit for their power called a Resonator. At the outset, players meet Jinhsi, a cheerful and considerate young girl who serves as the Sentinel Resonator for JuĆ©, the Sentinel of Jinzhou. Due to JuĆ©’s influence, Jinhsi’s special ability, or Forte, enables her to attack enemies in a manner similar to JuĆ©’s physical form, which resembles a Loong. Until the Rinacenta arc, Jinhsi is the only known Resonator of her kind within the storyline.
In the narrative, it’s mentioned several times that Threondians can possess Resonators who wish to harness their abilities, often at great personal cost. The character Cartethyia serves as a Resonator for three key entities: the Sentinel, Imperator, and Threnodian of Ragunna, specifically the Leviathan. However, due to an event where Imperator was forcefully absorbed by Leviathan, Cartethyia inadvertently became the Resonator for both the Leviathan and Imperator. This double-role results in two distinct forms for Cartethyia: her smaller form called Cartethyia, and her original form known as Fleurdelys. The story offers a lot more intricacies, but essentially, Cartethyia manifests these two shapes.
Furthermore, Mya, who had unsuccessfully served as a Resonator for Leviathan, entered the story during Septimont. Her tragic choice to take her own life highlights the profound contrast between being a Resonator of a Sentinel and a Resonator for a Threondian. In simpler terms, Mya was a failed Resonator for Leviathan, and she appeared in Septimont. Her suicide underscores the significant differences between being a Resonator for a Sentinel and a Resonator for a Threondian.
3) Carlotta Is Actually an Assassin
In a surprising twist, the diminutive yet assertive and refined Carlotta is secretly a hired gun for the Montellia Family. While she may have been overlooked amidst other events in version 2.0’s storyline, it’s clear that she takes care of anyone who hinders her family’s ambitions. When the situation calls for it, Carlotta demonstrates an unyielding ruthlessness, employing force to attain her objectives.
Within the narrative, Carlotta is often referred to as the ‘Family Manager’ of the Montellis. In this role, she tackles both external issues facing the family and internal matters, ensuring that any hurdles impeding their aspirations are smoothly removed. This becomes particularly clear during the Montelli vault incident, where alongside Rover, she is on a mission to apprehend a supposed intruder within the vault.
4) Cantarella Was Meant to Be the Sentinelās Resonator
As you understood, Imperator initially chose Cantarella as the Sentinel’s Resonator with the intention of utilizing her in the battle against the Threnodian Leviathan. A strategy was devised whereby Cantarella would employ the sword Tyrvine (which holds Imperator’s power) to undergo her Second Awakening, a heightened state that, should she survive, would empower her to resist the next Dark Tide, an impending event symbolizing darkness enveloping the world.
In this version, I attempted to make the language more conversational and easy to read while maintaining the original meaning.
If Cantarella had taken on the role of the Sentinel’s Resonator instead of Fleurdelys, it would have caused a problem because only one Resonator can be assigned to each Sentinel. This scenario might have led to the presumed demise of Imperator, Leviathan, and Fleurdelys. The reason is that Imperator and Leviathan were combined into a single entity, with Fleurdelys serving as their appointed Resonator. Accepting her role would have breached this rule, which was part of Imperator’s self-sacrificing plan.
Instead, Cantrella opted not to use the method she had considered and instead employed her short-range tenor as the Sentinel’s Resonator to restore power from the sword Tyrvine to Imperator. This temporary transfer of power enabled Imperator to command Leviathan for a brief moment. In the narrative, this event allowed Rover and an inner Fleurdelys to attack and lock in the Threnodian influence inside her, leading to the creation of today’s playable Cartheyia.
5) Camellya Is a Recruiter for The Black Shores
Despite her harsh personality and volatile disposition, Camellya excels as the combat recruiter for the Black Shores, a role that seems tailor-made for her. She thrives on the excitement of battle and the chase for liberty, an outlook fueled by the constant threat posed by her Overclocking condition, a fact she is fully conscious could claim her life at any instant.
Using her unique position as a Bloombearer of the Black Shores, Camellya focuses relentlessly on finding formidable adversaries, almost to the exclusion of everything else. Her intense fascination with conflict and battle verges on an all-consuming passion, occasionally veering into unsettling realms where her hunger for combat becomes almost insatiable.
6) Threnodians Cannot Be Killed
Though Threnodians are tangible beings, they don’t meet the conventional definition of death. This point is subtly hinted at during Imperator’s downfall in the final scene, but it can be easily overlooked. Upon merging with Leviathan, Imperator suffered a catastrophic loss of sanity and was transformed into something grotesque, a twisted mirror image of its former self. This transformation also affected the Fleurdyls, which is why gamers encounter them during the Inverted Tower narrative.
When Cantarella relinquishes her Second Awakening to rejuvenate Imperator’s strength, for a short while, Imperator regains command. It is during this instance that a profound truth unfolds: as far as human feelings and determination persist, Threnodian will remain. Essentially, if Imperator’s initial plan had been carried out, both Imperator and Fleurdeyls would have perished, but Leviathan would have endured, though potentially in a diminished state.
7) Phrolova Isnāt Actually Dead
Towards the conclusion of the 2.5 narrative, Phrolova plunges into the remnants of her lab’s energy, a situation that suggests she might have perished. However, Rover indicates that upon exploring her ‘Lost Beyond’ realm, they can sense that Phrolova may still be alive. This adds intrigue as the following events can be open to various interpretations.
In version 2.5, it’s disclosed that Phrolova is nearly immortal because of her unique hybrid status as half-human and half-Tacet Discord. Her regenerative powers are extraordinary, allowing her to regrow entire organs, suggesting that her plunge into energy residue may not have resulted in her death. However, the ensuing scene carries a more emotional and uncertain tone. As she descends, Phrolova encounters the frequencies of her deceased family members who warmly receive her with open arms. This encounter seems to symbolize a death or a transition into something beyond life. It’s worth noting that within Phrolova’s Lost Beyond, flowers called ‘Afterlife’ can be found, adding to the ambiguity surrounding this situation.
It’s unclear if Phrolova will reappear in the narrative, but her influence lingers deeply. For the moment, her part of the tale seems concluded, yet it remains incomplete. Be prepared for her to resurface when the circumstances align perfectly.
