3 Superhero Movie Trilogies Better Than Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight

While Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy was groundbreaking and redefined the superhero genre, three other trilogies actually surpass it. Nolan’s series, beginning with Batman Begins in 2005, stood out because it was different from most superhero movies of the time. Earlier films in the 2000s were lighthearted and entertaining, but they weren’t generally considered serious works.

As a huge Batman fan, I always loved how Christopher Nolan’s movies really captured the feel of the comics – they finally showed us the Batman I’d been reading about for years! The whole series was amazing, but The Dark Knight from 2008? That movie was a game-changer. It took superhero films to a whole new level of drama, action, and just how real it all felt. Still, even with everything great, it wasn’t without a few flaws.

Many viewers found The Dark Knight Rises underwhelming, and it didn’t quite meet the high hopes fans had for it. Also, by 2012, other superhero franchises were gaining popularity – particularly the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which started the same year as The Dark Knight and was changing the genre in exciting ways. As a result, Rises seemed less impactful in comparison.

With so many superhero movie series available today, The Dark Knight trilogy still stands out as one of the very best. However, a small number of other trilogies are even better – they’re either more consistently good, more entertaining, or stay truer to the original stories. These three sets of films just slightly outperform Nolan’s acclaimed superhero work.

3. The Captain America Trilogy (2011-2016)

The Captain America movies – Captain America: The First Avenger, and its two sequels – tell the story of Steve Rogers, Marvel’s iconic hero, over three films. Starting in 2011, each movie features a unique storyline with increasingly higher stakes. A strong supporting cast helps to highlight Captain America’s best traits throughout the series.

This Captain America trilogy is remarkably consistent in quality, with The Winter Soldier and Civil War being as strong as, or even surpassing, the first movie. Unlike some other superhero series like The Dark Knight, it doesn’t falter in its final installment. What’s truly special is that you can enjoy these three films on their own, without needing to follow the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe to understand them.

2. The X-Men Trilogy (2000-2006)

Debuting before Nolan’s series even began, the original X-Men trilogy reflects the best of what comic book movies could be in the early Aughts. Marvel’s iconic mutant team hit the big screen with a splash in 2000’s X-Men, and the action/adventure film deftly condenses years of lore down into a digestible standalone movie. It also firmly establishes Wolverine as the main character of the larger narrative.

X2 is an outright masterpiece, improving upon the first with more action and strong development of the characters. Even with a lackluster third movie, the trilogy still outshines Nolan’s The Dark Knight series. That’s because X-Mencomics aren’t nearly as easy to adapt as Batmanbooks. They require a large amount of condensing, and clever choices to put the focus in the right places. The X-Men trilogy does everything right in that regard, something that was never a given.

1. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy (2002-2007)

At one point, Sam Raimi’s trio of Spider-Man movies were the only live-action films to feature the wall-crawler. 2002’s Spider-Man continued Marvel’s new millennium hot-streak, and brought the comic publisher’s most famous hero to life in a stellar film. Instead of adapting the comics literally, the box office smash incorporated elements from various versions of Spidey’s comic book history.

Somehow, Spider-Man 2 was even better, and is one of the best comic book movies ever made. Though Spider-Man 3 was notorious, it has earned a better reputation in the years since. Peter Parker’s arc is reminiscent of the one seen in Nolan’s trilogy, but his characterization is more consistent across all three installments. The Dark Knight trilogy suffered similar pitfalls, but Spider-Man 3 is closer in tone and style to the rest of the series than The Dark Knight Rises.
