The team behind a popular Marvel series and a Star Wars film have signed on to create the new fantasy series based on Warrior Cats.
The popular children’s fantasy series Warrior Cats, written by Erin Hunter, consists of nine story arcs spread across six books, starting with The Prophecies Begin in 2003. These books follow the lives of wild cats divided into different Clans, and the struggles they face with each other. With over 90 million copies sold worldwide in more than 38 languages, the series has become a major success.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coolabi Group and Tencent Video have officially approved a new animated Warrior Cats TV show. A.C. Bradley will be the showrunner, and Rodrigo Blaas will direct. This is the first official adaptation of the popular book series, and the first season will be based on the events of The Prophecies Begin. Here’s a statement from Tina Ma, co-president and chief creative officer of Tencent Video, about the project.
We’re thrilled to be working with Coolabi on Warrior Cats, a story world with huge potential. Together, we’re expanding Warrior Cats to new audiences and platforms with a brand new animated series. It will feel like the Warrior Cats fans already love, but with a fresh approach designed to attract new viewers as well.
Before taking on Warrior Cats, Bradley worked on Marvel’s What If…? as a creator, head writer, and executive producer, and also contributed as a writer and consulting producer to Ms. Marvel. Blaas has experience with popular Disney+ franchises, having directed an episode of Star Wars: Visions season 2, titled “Sith.” They previously collaborated on Netflix’s Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, where Blaas was the supervising director and executive producer, and Bradley was a writer.
Having successfully worked with animation and established franchises before, they’re now adapting another well-loved series. Coolabi reports that fans are creating a huge amount of Warrior Cats content online – over 50 million views each month on YouTube and nearly 3 billion on TikTok. The Warrior Cats game on Roblox is also incredibly popular, with players having launched it over 728 million times.
The first official Warrior Cats toys are now available in the United States thanks to a partnership between Coolabi and Bonkers Toys. Allison Watkins of Coolabi Group predicts a very busy year for the Warrior Cats brand.
Before working on Warrior Cats, Bradley and Blaas were involved in several popular projects. What If…? received an 82% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while Ms. Marvel earned a very high 98% from critics and an 80% audience score. Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia also proved popular with audiences, achieving a 96% audience score. The second season of Star Wars: Visions received a perfect 100% critics’ score, and the episode Blaas directed earned a 7.7/10 on IMDb, being named one of the best of the season by ScreenRant.
