Chris Hemsworth became a major streaming star in 2026 thanks to his hit movie, Crime 101, which quickly became the most popular title on Prime Video. The film follows a sophisticated thief on the run and immediately drew comparisons to other fast-paced crime thrillers. With so many talented directors working in the genre, viewers have plenty of excellent options to enjoy alongside this new hit movie.
Thriller films come in many forms, ranging from slow, suspenseful stories to fast-paced, action-packed crime dramas. If you enjoy crime movies, Prime Video offers a great selection, including both clever heist stories and intense hitman films. Prime Video consistently produces quality original thrillers, and Chris Hemsworth’s upcoming 2026 movie is another example of their success.
Ronin is a Heist Movie Disguised as a Spy Thriller
I recently watched Ronin, and it’s a really gripping thriller. The movie stars Robert De Niro as Sam, a former CIA guy who’s now basically a gun for hire. He ends up in Paris working for this IRA operative named Deidre, and she hires him and a team of other mercenaries for a tough job. They have to ambush a convoy and steal a metal briefcase from someone inside. The cool part is, none of them know what’s in the case, but they have to work together anyway and figure out how to pull off this dangerous heist.
With Robert De Niro leading the cast, Ronin delivers another exciting action film centered around a heist, but this time with elements of spycraft. Director John Frankenheimer crafts a story where it’s hard to know who’s on whose side, as characters’ true loyalties are constantly in question.
Collateral is a Hitman Story That Wastes No Time
The movie Collateral opens with the arrival of Vincent, a hitman, in Los Angeles. He hires a taxi driver, Max, to drive him around the city. After their first stop results in a man’s death, Vincent reveals his deadly profession to Max and forces him to continue driving at gunpoint. Knowing he’s in mortal danger, Max starts to devise a plan to escape.
Michael Mann’s Collateral is often considered the definitive hitman movie, delivering one of the most gripping crime thrillers of the 2000s. The film immediately grabs your attention when Vincent enters Max’s taxi, and then expertly balances intense action with a deliberate, character-driven pace. Tom Cruise showcases his impressive range, creating a truly chilling and memorable portrayal of a psychopathic killer – a performance that foreshadowed similar roles like the one in No Country for Old Men.
The Usual Suspects is a Crime Story That Viewers Can’t Trust
I remember when they brought Verbal Kint in for questioning after that crazy shootout on the ship – it was a total disaster. While he was being held, he started telling this incredible story about how he got mixed up with this group of criminals. It turned out they were all working for this mysterious, powerful guy named Keyser Söze, and Verbal explained how he ended up caught in the middle of it all with them.
The Usual Suspects is a captivating film because of its intricate mystery and deliberately unclear storytelling. The story is told through someone who may not be telling the truth, leaving the audience to question everything they see. As the film unfolds, trust erodes, and the central question – who is the legendary Keyser Söze? – becomes increasingly compelling. From the criminals’ first meeting to the shocking conclusion, the film is utterly gripping.
Ambulance is a Michael Bay Thriller That Never Slows Down
Michael Bay injected his signature action into the crime genre with his 2022 film, Ambulance. The movie starts as a bank heist, but quickly spirals out of control when the police arrive unexpectedly. The thieves escape in an ambulance, hoping to disguise their getaway vehicle amongst Los Angeles traffic, and find themselves pursued by the entire police force.
From start to finish, Ambulance is a relentlessly paced thriller, showing a high-speed chase as thieves attempt to escape the police. Like many crime stories gone wrong, the film highlights the increasing stress and violence among the criminals as they realize their situation is hopeless. Ambulance and Crime 101 share a similar style, both centering around a flawed character attempting one final heist.
21 Bridges is an Overlooked Manhunt Fugitive Flick
I remember being really excited for 21 Bridges after Black Panther, but it sadly didn’t get the attention it deserved. The movie centers around Andre Davis, a tough NYPD detective who specializes in hunting down officers who break the law. He finds himself in a high-stakes situation when he goes after a thief who’s stumbled onto some serious dirt on a group of corrupt cops. Davis takes the drastic step of locking down all twenty-one of the city’s bridges, trapping the guy, only to realize the criminal has evidence that could bring down the whole department, creating a real dilemma.
When 21 Bridges came out, it didn’t get much attention, likely because Chadwick Boseman was so well-known for his Marvel role, and thrillers often get lost in the shuffle. It’s a gripping, large-scale manhunt in the style of The Fugitive, creating a sense of desperation for both the characters and viewers. While Crime 101 shows things from the perspective of criminals, 21 Bridges offers the opposite view, almost acting as a complementary film to the Prime Video series.
Drive is the Modern Neo-Noir Genre At Its Finest
The movie Drive is set in Los Angeles and follows a skilled stuntman who secretly works as a getaway driver. He begins a relationship with his neighbor, Irene, and forms a bond with her son, Benicio, while Irene’s husband is in prison. When the husband is released, he pulls the driver into a dangerous heist that puts them on the radar of a powerful mobster.
Drive blends the classic feel of a Western with a heavy dose of 1980s style, featuring synth music and a vibrant visual aesthetic. It starts as a simple escape story but quickly turns into a thrilling revenge tale, similar to a fast-paced crime drama. The movie focuses heavily on style, and surprisingly, this works in its favor, making for a visually captivating experience.
Baby Driver is a Stylish Heist Thriller
Baby Driver centers around a talented young getaway driver nicknamed Baby, who uses his skills to help criminals escape after robberies. His life takes a turn when he starts to doubt the people he’s working with and develops feelings for a waitress, making him question his dangerous lifestyle. After a messy heist goes wrong, the crew falls apart and everyone is left to fend for themselves.
As a big fan of heist movies, I see a lot of similarities between Baby Driver and Crime 101. Both feel like they really owe a debt to Michael Mann’s Heat. What’s fascinating is how both main characters are at a point where they’re thinking about leaving the criminal life behind, and this one last job really pushes their personal boundaries and what they believe in. Baby Driver is just so stylish and visually exciting, while Crime 101 feels a bit more grounded and thought-provoking. To me, they’re almost like two sides of the same coin – both great, but offering slightly different things.
No Country For Old Men is an Unforgettable Neo-Western Thriller
In 2007, the Coen Brothers released a critically acclaimed neo-Western thriller. The film centers on Llewelyn Moss, who finds a briefcase full of drug money and is forced to flee for his life. He’s pursued by Anton Chigurh, a ruthless and cold-blooded killer, who is determined to recover the money before a competing gang does.
The film No Country for Old Men is a gripping chase, with Moss constantly trying to outrun Chigurh. The 2007 Best Picture winner is a must-see for anyone interested in modern thrillers and is sure to leave a lasting impression. Though Crime 101 doesn’t quite match the intensity and complexity of the Coen Brothers’ film, both are essential viewing for fans of the genre.
Spike Lee Made a Decade-Defining Heist Movie With Inside Man
The movie Inside Man starts with an unusual bank robbery in New York City. A group of masked thieves takes hostages and a tense standoff with the police begins. Meanwhile, the bank owner, worried about damaging secrets hidden within the vault, secretly hires someone to handle the situation and keep it quiet. As the police investigate, they realize these aren’t typical criminals and must adapt to the robbers’ demands while they try to figure out what’s really going on.
This film, released in the 21st century, shares the realistic and careful style of Crime 101. Clive Owen delivers a performance with the same serious weight as Hemsworth, and it’s the type of movie that offers new insights each time you watch it.
Heat Defined the Heist Genre Overnight
Michael Mann’s 1995 film, Heat, is considered the peak of his crime movie work. The film stars Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, a professional bank robber, and follows his crew as they plan a major heist targeting a bank in downtown Los Angeles. Simultaneously, LAPD detective Vincent Hanna is relentlessly pursuing McCauley’s gang, navigating the city’s criminal world to stop them. Compared to typical crime films, Heat stands out as a landmark achievement.
Michael Mann’s film Heat, released thirty-one years ago, set the standard for heist thrillers and hasn’t been surpassed since. Its compelling characters, particularly McCauley and Hanna, and its perfectly planned heist cemented its place as a Hollywood classic. While Crime 101 could be 2026’s best thriller, Heat continues to be considered one of the greatest thrillers ever made.
