In a twist of fate, Vanguard decided to slash the minimum for its Institutional Target Retirement Funds (Institutional TRFs) from $100 million to a mere $5 million in December 2020. 🤯 This decision sparked a mass exodus of retirement plan investors from Investor TRFs to Institutional TRFs, enticed by the promise of lower expenses. 💸
Vanguard’s Quest for Redemption: Improving Disclosure Practices 🙌
Alas, the great migration left Vanguard in a bind, forcing them to sell assets out of the Investor TRFs. Unfortunately, these assets had appreciated during the pandemic-induced bull market, leading to unexpectedly massive capital gains distributions and tax liabilities for retail investors. 😱 Who knew downsizing could be so costly?!
The SEC, in its infinite wisdom, deemed Vanguard’s 2020 and 2021 prospectuses misleading.
