Zynga Boss Says Star Wars Hunters Was “No Failure” Despite Imminent Shutdown

Generally speaking, when a publisher decides to end support for a live-service game, many people assume that the game didn’t meet expectations, particularly financially, and its poor performance led to its termination. Contrary to this belief, Frank Gibeau, CEO of Zynga, states that Star Wars Hunters, their multiplayer shooter set in the Star Wars universe, which is scheduled to be shut down in October, was not a failure at all.

According to Gibeau’s conversation with The Game Business, the Zynga team developed both a robust technological foundation and an entertaining game with Hunters. However, despite these positive aspects, the game failed to establish itself as a profitable venture. Particularly, the absence of natural growth from the license was identified as one factor leading to its upcoming shutdown.

In simpler terms, Gibeau mentioned they faced challenges regarding the intellectual property and had doubts about including characters like Darth Vader or not. However, they managed to develop a game for Switch and mobile platforms that functioned flawlessly. It was enjoyable initially but lacked longevity and couldn’t sustain as a profitable business in the long run.

Gibeau additionally mentions that concluding Star Wars Hunters might offer another opportunity, or another attempt at scoring, with a new Intellectual Property. “The action shooter genre in mobile gaming is vast and expanding,” he stated. “We aim to be part of it. Now that we have an Unreal technology foundation, along with promising leads regarding our engineers, developers, and designers, we are ready to leverage the insights gained from Star Wars Hunters and apply them towards another chance at success with a different intellectual property.

Initially unveiled during a Nintendo Direct broadcast in February 2021, Star Wars Hunters was officially released in June 2024. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Zynga declared that the game would be shutting down on October 1, 2025. A final update for all users was rolled out on April 15, and unfortunately, plans for a PC version were also abandoned.

Star Wars Hunters is still available now for mobile devices and Nintendo Switch.
