The sequel to the popular animated film, Zootopia 2, is expected to be a major release in 2025. Disney often launches its biggest films over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a strategy that’s proven successful for movies like Aladdin, Frozen, and Moana 2, though not every film is a hit – examples include Treasure Planet and Wish. Disney is hoping Zootopia 2, the continuation of the Academy Award-winning story, will be another big success.
According to BoxOfficeTheory’s projections, *Zootopia 2* is expected to earn between $115 and $130 million during its opening weekend. This estimate covers only the traditional Friday-to-Sunday period. Because the film opens on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, the total opening numbers will likely be higher. The first *Zootopia* film debuted with $75 million in March 2016 and ultimately earned $341 million in the U.S. and $1 billion globally.
‘Zootopia 2’ Will Be the Must-See Family Movie of the Year

A sequel to *Zootopia* might be as successful as *Inside Out 2*, as both films are arriving nine years after their originals. The first *Zootopia* and *Inside Out* were both big hits with critics and audiences, and their popularity has continued to grow. *Moana 2*, released the same year as *Inside Out 2*, earned $1 billion, which is encouraging for *Zootopia 2*. However, it also means there are high expectations for the new film to be a success.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve been looking at the potential box office numbers for *Zootopia 2*, and they’re looking *really* good. Even if you don’t include Thanksgiving, a $115 to $130 million opening weekend would put it among the top five biggest of the year. At the lower end of that range, it’d be fifth, just behind *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*. But if it hits $130 million, it’ll jump up to number three, beating out *Superman*. It would still be behind *Lilo & Stitch* and *A Minecraft Movie*, which both had huge openings. Now, there’s one movie to watch out for first: *Wicked: For Good* comes out a week earlier, on November 21st, and that’s definitely going to impact the charts before *Zootopia 2* arrives.
The movie *Wicked: For Good* is already a huge success, breaking pre-sale records on Fandango for 2025. Experts predict it could have the biggest opening weekend of the year, potentially earning between $155 and $190 million. Both *Wicked* and *Moana 2* helped boost ticket sales during the 2024 holidays, and *Wicked: For Good* and *Zootopia 2* are expected to do the same in 2025. Looking ahead to December, *Avatar: Fire and Ash* has the potential to be a massive hit, possibly earning $2 billion, similar to previous *Avatar* films. These upcoming movies, particularly *Zootopia 2* and *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, are likely to offset the financial losses Disney experienced with *Tron: Ares*.
