Upon the unveiling of “Thunderbolts”, many Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts were taken aback to discover that Baron Zemo, portrayed by Daniel Brühl, was not included in the principal cast. While some fans harbored expectations of a guest appearance, their anticipation was thoroughly dashed over the weekend as the character is conspicuously missing from the movie. However, it appears an earlier draft of the “Thunderbolts” script had one of the original team members assuming a significant role towards the end of the film.
Eric Pearson mentioned in an interview that Baron Zemo was once included in the story, but a cut post-credits scene showed him as the hidden controller of everything. This felt confusing and unnecessary to both the screenwriter and others.
It’s important to note that at some stage, we visited a house that belonged to a child who had recently hosted a high school party. Given this context, it seems reasonable to assume that Zemo might have been present at that particular time.
It seems that at some point in the past, a tag hinted at someone or something significant being involved. This tag suggested that Baron Zemo was manipulating events even from behind bars. While I could be speculating, it feels plausible to me that there might have been another version of this tag where Zemo managed to escape and swap identities with someone – perhaps Valentina’s assistant – and he was operating under a Widow mask.
Hela’s people might not be too pleased to learn that their leader won’t appear in the final cut of Thunderbolts*, but his journey in the MCU may not have reached its end just yet. Last we saw him, the antagonist from Captain America was momentarily united with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes in Falcon & the Winter Soldier. Currently, Zemo is locked up at The Raft, a facility that also houses The Leader. Despite the recent Captain America film, Brave New World, falling short of box office predictions, there’s still a possibility for a future installment to bring back Zemo in a major capacity. After all, several plot points from Falcon & the Winter Soldier still remain unresolved.
Baron Zemo Simply Didn’t Fit in ‘Thunderbolts’
Even though Baron Zemo played a significant role in the formation of the team in the comics, he didn’t align with the storyline that the creators of Thunderbolts envisioned. In fact, including Zemo as the true evil mastermind would have diluted the main focus of the film centered around Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh). Despite attempts by Eric Pearson and his team to incorporate him into the story, ultimately, Baron Zemo was left out of the final version of the movie.
occasionally, people might assume that we intentionally deviate from our planned path, but in reality, Zemo plays a crucial role in alternate versions of their story. He serves as a connector between different narratives, and our unique concept has eliminated the necessity for such a connection.
However, our thoughts often return to the comics. The question is frequently posed, “Could Baron Zemo be incorporated in an intelligent manner? Definitely!” But for the narrative we wanted to share and grew fond of, Yelena was pivotal, and every character’s journey revolved around her. As we also planned to introduce Bob, Zemo simply didn’t align. We weren’t keen on having a mere ornamental bird.
Initially, it appeared that the character Zemo might make an appearance in the script, but this idea was abandoned by the time director Jake Schreier came aboard the project. In fact, the filmmaker stated he had no knowledge of any plans to include the villain. Unfortunately, fans who enjoy Zemo will have to wait for some indeterminate period before seeing him again, whether it’s in a movie theater or on Disney+.
