Look, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were amazing and really blew up the Zelda series. But honestly, most of us are itching for something new now. It’s a little disappointing to hear that the big Zelda game coming out next year seems to be leaning really heavily into the same ideas and style as those two, when we’re all hoping for a fresh direction.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which is scheduled to release in May 2027. Nintendo hasn’t shared many official details, but bits of information and rumors have gradually surfaced, giving us a glimpse of what the film might be like.
A recently leaked logo from the movie set suggests the film will have strong ties to Breath of the Wild. Although this logo likely isn’t the final version, and other new details point to something different, it indicates Nintendo isn’t abandoning the successful world of Zelda with its future projects.
The Zelda Movie Already Has Too Many Breath of the Wild Connections to Ignore
Okay, so someone on the Zelda movie’s stunt team posted a pic on Instagram. It was a crew t-shirt, and the logo on it? It looked exactly like the logo from Breath of the Wild. Seriously, it’s almost a perfect copy. Pretty cool to see they’re leaning into that game’s style!
One of the most striking details of the logo is a flower blooming from the letter ‘Z’. This flower is known as the Silent Princess, and it’s a significant symbol in the game. It’s a very rare flower, almost extinct, but it can be found growing near special places called Fairy Fountains all over Hyrule, which shows its strong link to magical power.
The Silent Princess flower holds a special meaning for Princess Zelda, reflecting her passion for science and studying plants – a pursuit she values more than her royal duties.
The recently revealed logo, along with Princess Lana’s blue outfit and her apparent adventure with Link in the trailers, strongly hints that her character (played by Bo Bragason) will take a lot of inspiration from Breath of the Wild. Even if she isn’t the same Princess Zelda from that game, everything suggests this new movie will draw heavily from the world and style of Breath of the Wild, perhaps more than many fans expected.
Despite Its Wild Era Imagery, The Zelda Movie’s Plot Looks More Like Traditional Zelda
Okay, so everyone figured the movie would take a lot from Breath of the Wild, and it definitely does! But it’s not just a retelling of that game, thankfully. We’ve learned a bunch of stuff about the film already, and it’s clear they’re going in their own direction and not simply recreating the Wild Era exactly.
As a huge Zelda fan, I’m so excited to see Link (played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) sporting his iconic green tunic in all the photos! And from what I’ve seen online about Impa, it looks like they’re going with a younger version of her, kind of like we see in games like Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword, which is awesome!
Another promising set of information about the movie comes from its . On the official site, a storyline synopsis for the film was added that seems to differentiate it from the Wild Era in a few key ways. IMDb’s recently added Zelda movie plot synopsis reads:
The popular video game ‘The Legend of Zelda’ is coming to life as a movie! It tells the story of Link, a brave young warrior tasked with saving the magical kingdom of Hyrule from evil. Hyrule is in danger because of Ganon, a cruel warlord who wants the Triforce – a legendary artifact said to give anyone unlimited power. To defeat Ganon, Link must go on a dangerous adventure, fighting monsters, navigating difficult dungeons, and solving tricky puzzles to find powerful items that can help him succeed.
We don’t know yet if this is the actual storyline of the movie, or just a temporary outline, but the details are intriguing as they stand. Notably, there’s no indication that Link will have amnesia, suggesting the film won’t closely follow the plot of Breath of the Wild. Also, describing Ganon as a “Warlord” implies he’ll be a thinking, feeling person – a departure from the chaotic, natural disaster he was as Calamity Ganon in Breath of the Wild.
As a big Zelda fan, I’m getting the feeling this story is going to be a really classic fairytale, leaning heavily into the series’ established lore. But it’s also possible we’re seeing a movie that fills in the backstory for Breath of the Wild – you know, like those flashback scenes in the game? It would be amazing if it all leads to Zelda sealing away Ganon and then sets up Link waking up to stop him in a future movie!
Zelda’s Wild Era Isn’t Going Anywhere
Based on the latest details, it seems this movie draws inspiration from multiple time periods within the world of Zelda, including elements from the Calamity era.
The upcoming movie could benefit from including imagery from across the entire Zelda series, despite Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom being the most popular games. The Zelda fanbase includes many longtime players who fondly remember older, 2D games like A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening. Plus, rumors suggest Nintendo plans to release a remake of one of these classic titles soon.
It’s also clear the movie draws a lot of inspiration from Breath of the Wild. Nintendo even acknowledges this by giving the cast merchandise with the BOTW logo, highlighting how popular and recognizable that Zelda game has become.
The next game in the series might explore new ideas and settings, though some believe it could use the same technology as Breath of the Wild. However, the upcoming movie appears to be a final celebration of the memorable characters and world from Breath of the Wild.
If the visuals from this movie become standard, elements like Link’s blue tunic and the Silent Princess flower could become permanently associated with the Zelda series. In effect, the world and style of this game might never truly be considered ‘over,’ but instead become another lasting part of the Zelda mythos.
The Legend of Zelda movie is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027.
