If you’re subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, you’ll automatically receive the updates for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2 at no extra cost. However, accessing these upgrades might require a bit of navigation, so keep that in mind.
When moving your data from one Switch (Switch 1) to another Switch (Switch 2), it initiates a process of downloading several software packages from your original system. However, contrary to what might initially seem, the download and update process doesn’t run automatically. Instead, launching The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2 triggers the download of the game version compatible with that specific device. A menu option will appear at the bottom, allowing you to upgrade to the Switch 2 version. Choosing this option directs you to the Nintendo eShop store page, although you can also navigate there manually.
However, this is where the process might confuse unaware Hyrulians. The store page shows two distinct buttons. On the left side, beside the label “Online + Expansion Pack,” there’s a “Download” button. On the right side, labeled as “Continue,” is a larger, more prominent button that typically indicates where to complete transactions. Yet, surprisingly, the free option for subscribers can be found by clicking the “Download” button instead.
As a gamer, here’s how I would put it: “You can still choose to continue and buy the content, meaning you’d keep it even if your Nintendo Switch Online subscription ends. However, if you don’t mind potential interruptions, there’s no need to spend the extra $10. Buying the upgrade will trigger a second download, so make sure to restart the software once the download is complete.
The brand new Nintendo Switch 2 has hit the market, giving numerous enthusiasts their initial opportunity to play the newly released games such as Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. Don’t forget to consult our guide for restocking if you are still having trouble locating the system. If you happen to be an Expansion Pack subscriber, you now have the added bonus of playing GameCube games on your Nintendo Switch 2!
