Celebrity Zaina Sesay, known for her work in reality TV, social influence, and entertainment industry, had a chat with TopMob for our Rising Stars interview series, discussing her experiences on challenging programs like ‘The Ultimatum’ on Netflix.

Among numerous social media influencers transitioning into traditional media, Zaina Sesay stands out with her extensive background in the entertainment sector compared to many others.

In a natural and easy-to-read manner: Sesay, with more than 137K followers on Instagram, shares a variety of lifestyle, fitness, and beauty content with her audience. During the latter part of 2024, she became a familiar face as she appeared in Season 3 of Netflix’s The Ultimatum.

Before embarking on a career as a content creator, Sesay had previously worked at Paramount, where she lent her talents to various shows on MTV and VH1 such as Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Party, Basketball Wives, Girls Cruise, Love & Listings, and Teyana & Iman.

I was thrilled to have an exclusive chat with Sesay, where we explored her fascinating journey as an up-and-coming influencer and a seasoned TV showmaker with decades of expertise under her belt.

Falling in love with storytelling

As a kid hailing from Maryland, I was fortunate to be born to parents originating from Sierra Leone, nestled in West Africa. Interestingly, my mother carries Lebanese roots, which infused a one-of-a-kind perspective on life within me since my early days due to the rich cultural tapestry that surrounded me.

In a nurturing environment brimming with love, culture, and just the right amount of organized clamor, I was cradled and cultivated – an experience I can only describe as the best kind of chaos. My upbringing was a vibrant tapestry of diverse influences that molded my viewpoint from a tender age.

Amongst four siblings, Sesay was born every four years, positioning her as the quintessential middle child. This unique arrangement necessitated an independent, flexible, and inventive mindset for her, as she had to create her own niche to establish her individuality.

Since her early years, Sesay has been captivated by storytelling, frequently engaged in writing, filming, and editing as an outlet for self-expression, which eventually immersed her deeply into the world of content production.

Creating content has always been a natural outlet for me. As a child, I was the one who was always capturing moments on camera, editing footage, and finding unique ways to share experiences. When platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok began gaining popularity, I discovered they provided an ideal venue for me to express myself authentically. Sharing my voice allowed me to connect with others, bring laughter, or simply make them feel understood, which led me to understand that this was something I truly wanted to pursue seriously.

Sesay had a deep-seated enthusiasm for crafting concepts and seeing them materialize, which led her to the captivating world of the entertainment industry. As she grew older and approached college age, she decided to delve deeper into this passion by studying Film and Media Arts at Temple University in Philadelphia. There, she continued to create content online, further honing her skills.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share an impressive accomplishment of mine: During my sophomore year, my content was so remarkable that it secured me the top spot in a nationwide contest organized by YouTube Creator Institute. This recognition granted me a trip to Los Angeles, where I had the privilege of being part of a program nurturing budding talent.

She shared that the program focused on nurturing budding creators by enhancing their narrative and production abilities. It broadened her perspective on the potential of digital media, she explained. Given her passion for storytelling and its power to unite people, she felt compelled to explore this field further.

Eager to bring her dream to life, she sought practical knowledge by interning in the entertainment industry, and spent time at MTV, a job she still fondly remembers as one of the highlights from her college years.

She confessed that, with such determination, she made the journey three times each week by Greyhound bus from Philadelphia.

Through her time at VH1 and this specific experience, she developed a distinct perspective on crafting her own content. This experience provided valuable insights into what strategies were effective and ineffective for her personal projects.

Now that I have complete authority over my content, I can embrace genuine expression while ensuring it appeals to others. Using my unique experiences, I create content that’s innovative, original, and authentic to me.” She clarified this approach.

Zaina Sesay spills the tea on her Ultimatum breakup

Zaina has experience working in various roles, including on-camera appearances, which include stints on reality TV programs such as Teen Mom and The Ultimatum. Her television journey began organically due to her close bond with friend Cheyenne Davis, who was a regular cast member on MTV’s Teen Mom and other shows like Are You The One? and The Challenge’s Rivals III.

I initially appeared on ‘Teen Mom’ due to my longtime friend, Cheyenne Davis,” Sesay explained. “We were friends well before her reality TV career, so my presence was natural – I simply showed up as I usually would within our friendship.

Yet, on The Ultimatum, Sesay had a noticeably changed look. She explains that her former partner, JR Warren, stumbled upon an ad for the show and chose to apply, making her believe he was prepared for a new chapter… however, viewers will recall that things didn’t unfold as planned at all.

She commented, “We had nearly reached our third year together, and it felt like our discussions on marriage were coming to a standstill.” When he appeared enthusiastic about the topic, she interpreted this as a sign that he was starting to prioritize their relationship more seriously. However, in the end, his true motives turned out to be quite different from what she had expected.

In the popular series where partners decide between ‘Marrying’ or ‘Moving on’, Sesay experienced the painful breakup instigated by JR. This emotional scene was witnessed by millions of viewers globally, leaving Zaina feeling as though it wasn’t a genuine event due to their prior conversations about their relationship.

She stated that he mentioned his job change as the primary cause for his reluctance, and even questioned if she would exit the show without a commitment so they could continue developing their connection. In retrospect, it proved to be a fortunate turn of events. It helped me understand the importance of not romanticizing warning signs, taking people at face value, and letting go of the initial excitement in a relationship.

In the course of a relationship developing, it’s crucial to notice how someone values you in the present moment. If their deeds don’t align with their promises, that speaks volumes. It was a hard lesson, particularly when I uncovered the lies, manipulation, and dishonesty a year later while watching the show. Nevertheless, I opted for holistic healing – mind, body, and spirit – which propelled me to grow, release, and eventually transition towards more positive opportunities.

Currently, Sesay is actively establishing her unique identity across various social media platforms, standing out among the abundance of lifestyle, fitness, and wellness content by virtue of her sincerity and candid conversations regarding her personal experiences.

She shared with us that her unique trait is being open and inclusive, keeping others informed as events unfold in real time. Instead of merely presenting the best moments, she openly discusses challenges, triumphs, and everything in between – be it fitness, lifestyle, or self-care. Her approach aims to make these topics feel intimate and relatable, rather than just inspiring.

In my view of wellness, I strive for harmony rather than striving for perfection. My philosophy is flexible, reflecting the fact that I’m not confined to a single mold. Instead, I continue to grow, learn, and navigate life’s complexities, much like those around me.

Regarding her future aspirations, Zaina plans to expand and strengthen her online presence further, and is currently working towards obtaining a physical trainer certification. Additionally, she has some exciting projects in development that she can’t wait to share with her followers, as she aims to be more open and authentic beyond the glare of reality television.
