Yvette Nicole Brown, known for her roles in shows like Community and Victorious, is joining the cast of a new Victorious spinoff coming to Netflix. She and Daniella Monet announced the show on October 23rd with a fun lip-sync video. Brown is reprising her role as Helen Dubois, the outspoken theater manager from Victorious and Drake & Josh.
The new series focuses on Daniella Monet’s character, Trini Vega, Tori Vega’s older sister. Trini is returning to Hollywood Arts as an unqualified substitute teacher, much like her original portrayal as a somewhat attention-seeking and untalented student. The show will follow Trini as she unexpectedly inspires a new group of talented students to find their way at the prestigious performing arts school. The new cast includes Alyssa Miles (known for Hanging Out with Alyssa and Xavier), Emmy Liu-Wang (Raven’s Home), Peyton Jackson (The Woman in the Yard), Erika Swayze (School Spirits), and Martin Kamm (Web of Spider-Man).
It’s unclear if any more actors from Victorious will be joining the new show, which takes place at their old high school. Along with Monet and Justice, the series launched the careers of stars like Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, Leon Thomas III, and Avan Jogia. Victoria Justice is the most likely to appear, as her character will be the new lead’s sister. However, many reboots succeed even without bringing back all family members.
Despite being created by Dan Schneider – who faced accusations of inappropriate behavior during his time working on Nickelodeon shows, as detailed in the documentary Quiet on Set and Jennette McCurdy’s memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died – Schneider hasn’t been involved with Nickelodeon since 2018. According to Deadline, he has no role in the new series, Hollywood Arts. Jake Farrow and Samantha Martin are leading the show as showrunners, with Monet serving as an executive producer.
The new Nickelodeon show is heading to Netflix first, but it will likely air on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ later. This arrangement happened because of the recent merger between Paramount and Skydance. If Paramount buys HBO Max before the show starts streaming in 2026, things could become even more complex. Perhaps Helen can help us understand all of this better.
