BEEP has revealed that they’re bringing out a collection called “Ys Legacy Collection ~Ys I&II&III for X68000 Z~” this Winter in Japan. This upcoming set includes both “Ys I & II” and “Ys III: Wanderers From Ys”, which will be available on the specialized retro PC game emulator console.
To clarify, the X68000 was a personal computer designed specifically for Japan and launched in 1987. Due to its hardware being similar to late ’80s arcade games, many users opted to use it primarily for gaming by means of compatible floppy disks. The Japanese company Zuiki is capitalizing on the X68000’s nostalgic appeal by unveiling an emulator mini-console called the X68000 Z.
Regarding the Ys series, BEEP collaborated with Nihon Falcom before to launch the authentic X68000 versions of Ys I & II: Lost ancient kingdom and Ys III: Wanderers From Ys in 2021 and late 2022 respectively. These releases came with original floppy disks. In light of the X68000’s SD card capabilities, this new bundle will instead include the games on an SD card for easy access.
In passing, it’s worth mentioning that Zuiki intends to distribute the X68000 Z emulator consoles globally, not just in Japan. However, their crowdfunding campaign for the X68000 Z SUPER / Z XVI on Indiegogo has been temporarily halted.
