As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both virtual and cinematic battles, I find myself aligning with Quentin Tarantino‘s perspective on this matter. Having spent countless hours strategizing, executing, and grappling with the moral implications of my in-game actions, I can attest to the fact that a clean kill carries more weight than an incidental one.
Quentin Tarantino frequently discusses films directed by other filmmakers. He either commends them or highlights their flaws, and one such movie was a 1992 action thriller featuring Harrison Ford. He criticized this production, claiming it violated the principles of good cinema and suggested that its maker should be penalized, perhaps even imprisoned in “film jail.”
As a dedicated fan, let me share my thoughts on “Patriot Games,” directed by Phillip Noyce. In this gripping movie, Harrison Ford brilliantly portrays Jack Ryan, a character thrust into danger due to unforeseen circumstances that place him squarely in the crosshairs of a ruthless terrorist. The intricate tale of retribution in this film caught the attention of Quentin Tarantino, who praised its merits during an interview with Dennis Hopper. He found the story of two men seeking revenge against each other to be compelling.
The most significant issue arose towards the end of the movie, specifically during the resolution phase of the struggle between the lead character and his adversary. At this juncture, Noyce’s film failed to maintain Tarantino’s allegiance.
However, they engage in a senseless squabble aboard the ship, and they perform an action that my circle and I abhor the most: Harrison Ford strikes the man, who lands on an anchor, causing his death. It seems as if a council is deliberating over this, saying, “He took the life with his own hands, but it wasn’t intentional, you see, so he can return to his family, and his daughter, and his wife, still considered a decent character. He brought about the demise, but it was more of an accident.” In my opinion, the instant you eliminate your villain by having him fall onto something, you deserve a cinematic penalty. You’ve breached the rule of good filmmaking.
In numerous movies, conflicts are often resolved in ways that make the main character seem more like an unintentional wrongdoer rather than a calculated killer. This method allows filmmakers to keep the protagonist from appearing ruthless, but it frustrates Tarantino as he prefers the antagonists to meet their end through deliberate actions and not by chance, allowing the protagonists to maintain their moral integrity despite their violent actions.
