YouTube is currently trying out a new feature that lets channels limit who can watch their videos – only their biggest supporters will have access.
In late May, creators started noticing a new option while uploading videos called “top fans.”
Unlike options that restrict viewing to those with a link or paying members, the ‘top fans’ setting is a more exclusive choice.
This setting limits who can watch and comment on your video to the top 1% of viewers who have previously engaged with your content, acting as a thank you to your most dedicated fans.
Images of a new feature began circulating on social media, and many creators were confused about its purpose.
YouTube is experimenting with a new feature called “Top Fans.” It lets creators share new videos exclusively with their most dedicated viewers – the top 1% of their audience. To qualify as a “Top Fan,” someone needs to have watched and commented on 97% of all your videos. That’s…

YouTube responds to confusion over “top fans” feature
Nate Curtiss recently posted on LinkedIn that the “top fans” feature primarily helps larger channels that already have a big following.
When the conversation became more intense, YouTube’s Head of Editorial, Rene Ritchie, explained that the feature was initially planned for release in 2025 and isn’t meant for the average YouTube creator.
He explained that last fall, YouTube revealed plans to release exclusive music videos directly to artists and their fans. This current rollout is a test of that feature specifically for music artist channels, not general creator channels. He hopes this clarifies things.
It’s a bit strange that YouTube announced this new feature using its Creators account on X (formerly Twitter) in 2025, considering it doesn’t seem to be designed for creators.
Reward your most dedicated fans with special, exclusive videos! This feature lets you share content only they can see, helping you build stronger relationships with them. It’s being tested worldwide starting in October 2025.

In September 2025, YouTube announced a new feature for creators: exclusive video content. Creators can now share videos only visible to their most dedicated fans, helping them show appreciation and strengthen their community. The initial test of this feature will begin worldwide in October 2025.
We’re not sure why this feature is just becoming available to some creators, or if YouTube intends to make it available to everyone soon.
This feature won’t likely be used for major content releases, as it’s fairly limited. Instead, expect creators to offer it as a small bonus or thank you to their most loyal, long-term viewers.
