YouTuber’s Shocking Drug Smuggling Arrest Ruins Marathon Dreams in Japan!

Fitness influencer Matthew Fox was apprehended when he tried to sneak cannabis pills into Japan while visiting for the 2025 Osaka Marathon, which ultimately led to his arrest.

Among the leading figures in the world of long-distance running, Fox stands out with his significant following on his ‘Sweat Elite’ YouTube channel, which also happens to be the name of his running business, boasting more than 144,000 subscribers.

As I type this, Fox’s Instagram account, with more than 23,000 followers, indicates that he aims to complete a marathon in less than two hours and thirty minutes each month. However, achieving this target seems unlikely for the near future.

YouTuber arrested over failed THC gummy smuggling attempt

On April 9, 2025, Fox was taken into custody in Osaka, Japan, having visited there earlier in February for the yearly Osaka Marathon.

As a fervent admirer, I found myself caught off guard by the actions of my beloved YouTuber. It turned out that he had attempted to illegally import tablets laced with THC, a key component in marijuana, into Japan – a country with unyielding drug laws. The mere possession of such substances, even in trace amounts like marijuana, is considered illegal and can land you in jail here. I’m just hoping this won’t tarnish his reputation or lead to any serious consequences.

As I knew I couldn’t take them with me on my journey, I apparently arranged for a third-party delivery service to ship them to Japan from the U.S., hoping they would arrive before me.

Previously, Fox has been transparent about carrying THC pills with him, admitting during an episode of his Sweat Elite podcast on February 25th that he understands Japan’s strict stance on cannabis, as the country does not tolerate recreational marijuana use at all.

He mentioned on a podcast that he often carries THC gummies during his travels, noting that while many countries usually do not enforce strict checks, Japan stands out as they meticulously search travelers each time.

On previous occasions, Fox has found himself in difficulty while visiting Japan. Back in 2023, he faced a permanent ban from the Ageo City Half Marathon for dishonest conduct. Specifically, he was discovered to have been using someone else’s race bib during the event.

Unfortunately, the YouTuber encountered yet another setback when Fox failed to complete the Osaka Marathon at the 22-kilometer mark, which is slightly more than half the total 40-kilometer distance.

Since the Osaka marathon, Fox has been inactive across all his social media platforms. His most recent YouTube post, which focused on the January 2025 Houston Marathon, was published about two months back.

Recently, it’s not just foxes that have found themselves in legal trouble while traveling through Asia; controversial streamer Johnny Somali and content creator Vitaly are currently embroiled in such issues. The former is looking at potential years behind bars due to multiple criminal charges in South Korea resulting from his conduct, while the latter is currently detained by police in the Philippines for disturbing local residents.
