Jake Koehler, both a certified scuba diver and popular YouTuber, shared a poignant experience in an interview with People, disclosing that he narrowly missed being part of the perilous OceanGate submarine expedition.
Approximately two years ago, the deep-sea submersible Titan, belonging to OceanGate, suffered an implosion in the North Atlantic Ocean close to Newfoundland, Canada, while on a journey to explore the well-known underwater remnants of the RMS Titanic.
Unfortunately, all five individuals onboard perished during an implosion caused by excessive pressure applied onto the submarine’s carbon fiber hull. At extreme depths, the pressure became too much for the sub to withstand, causing it to collapse. Remains believed to be human from the victims were found and retrieved in June and October of 2023.
As Scuba Jake, I had the extraordinary opportunity to tread where few have gone before – the Titan, just days prior to its catastrophic collapse. In an interview with People in June 2025, I shared details of this incredible experience.

YouTuber admits he was nearly on deadly OceanGate voyage
While submerged 33 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, a thick mist started moving in, compelling him and the entire crew to return to the deck.
He informed People that due to persistent fog, the event we were supposed to attend was called off before we could proceed from the platform. It’s unclear, but perhaps the fog played a role in preventing what might have been a dangerous situation for me.
Additionally, Koehler pointed out several concerning signs regarding the submarine, including a seemingly damaged section of plastic on the side of the Titan.
He clarified, “It appeared to have some cosmetic flaws, as I understand it. It seemed there was a small part or accessory on the side that seemed damaged, possibly due to waves or another force.
“Who am I to question these people? You know, it’d be like me questioning, you know, Elon Musk.”
In addition, Jake appeared in a documentary titled “Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Catastrophe” available on Netflix, sharing his experiences while on board the ship prior to its fateful voyage.
I find myself pondering, ‘Gosh, I wonder if it were me in his place.’ It struck a chord, and honestly, it wasn’t easy to hold back the emotions.
It’s understandable that everyone sometimes wishes they could change the past by giving a warning, like ‘Don’t do that,’ but alas, taking risks is part of the challenge when one is testing boundaries.
It turns out that Jake wasn’t the only popular YouTuber who almost embarked on the Titan’s perilous journey. MrBeast, another YouTube star, disclosed that he too had nearly joined the expedition, having been invited earlier in the month. In a now-viral tweet, he expressed his feelings by saying, “It’s quite chilling to think I might have been on board.
