YouTube personality Mykhailo Polyakov, hailing from the United States, has been refused bail and could spend several years behind bars due to his attempt to clandestinely communicate with an isolated indigenous group residing on North Sentinel Island, utilizing a diet Coke bottle and coconut.
At age 24, this content producer has gained recognition for exploring dangerous locations like regions under Taliban control in Afghanistan, which he shares on his platform that boasts around 3,000 subscribers.
Come October 2024, I found myself unable to successfully navigate towards North Sentinel Island, a mysterious land nestled between India and Thailand. This secluded island is the ancestral home of the enigmatic, uncontacted Sentinelese tribe.
Following several unsuccessful tries, he successfully reached the shore on Saturday, March 29, 2025, carrying a can of diet soda and a coconut as gifts along with him.

To my delight, I hadn’t expected such a grand welcome, but alas, no one from the tribe appeared. Blowing a whistle to gather their attention, I stood patiently on the beach for quite some time, hoping for a friendly face. Eventually, I bid farewell to the unoccupied shore. However, it wasn’t long before the authorities tracked me down and soon enough, we were in conversation.
The Sentinelese community is recognized as being under protection, with the Indian authorities maintaining surveillance over the seas surrounding North Sentinel Island to deter potential outsiders who could inadvertently endanger the tribe, or face danger themselves.
In 2018, it was reported that missionary John Allen Chau met a tragic end when he was apparently slain by the indigenous tribe of the Sentinelese Island, who are known to retaliate against outsiders approaching their territory with arrows aimed at cameras and film crews that venture too near.

On Monday, March 31st, Polyakov was apprehended by authorities and accused of illegally entering the restricted tribal region of North Sentinel Island, an area safeguarded under the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Act of 1956, according to official news sources.
YouTuber who tried to contact Sentinelese tribe denied bail
On Tuesday, April 15, the YouTube personality attended a court hearing, but was not granted bail and his detention by authorities was prolonged instead. If convicted, he could spend up to five years behind bars and be fined as well.
According to senior police officer Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, he took great care and spent multiple days organizing his trip to the island and connecting with the local tribe.

Authorities additionally noted that Polyakov’s actions potentially endangered the safety and welfare of the Sentinelese community, a group whose interaction with non-locals is legally restricted in order to preserve their unique cultural existence.
Not just Polyakov, there are other influencers facing legal consequences due to their actions overseas. For instance, the notorious streamer Johnny Somali is now in South Korea, awaiting trial on several charges that guarantee imprisonment. Similarly, Vitaly is currently incarcerated in the Philippines after disturbing local residents.
