A YouTuber created a homemade gaming console similar to the Steam Machine, claiming it could offer better performance at a lower cost than Valve’s official version.
Zac Builds documented his ambitious project to create a gaming console reminiscent of Valve’s never-released Steam Machine. He used readily available computer components, some custom-made parts, and a uniquely designed case to bring his vision to life.
Custom Steam Machine build aims to beat Valve’s
Since Valve hasn’t shared the exact parts for the official Steam Machine, Zac Builds created one using components they found themselves. To keep costs down, they often bought used parts from local sellers instead of new ones.
They first exceeded their budget, but ultimately saved money by combining older and newer hardware for the most expensive parts – the CPU, GPU, and RAM.
To achieve the desired look and dimensions similar to the Steam Machine, the creator completely redesigned the case. They used 3D scans of all the internal parts to build a custom exterior with features like front-mounted USB ports, a glowing light bar, removable magnetic panels, and a genuine wood front panel.
Making the software work was also difficult. Initially, they aimed to use SteamOS, but it didn’t work well with newer computers. So, they switched to Bazzite, a Linux system built to look and feel like SteamOS.
During testing, the system consistently achieved 60 frames per second at 4K resolution in demanding games like Arc Raiders and Cyberpunk 2077, thanks to upscaling technology. The creator believes this build could be 50 to 100% more powerful than Valve’s system, based on these results and the components used, though the final specifications haven’t been officially released.
The total cost ended up being about $950, a little less than the expected $1,000 for the more powerful version. However, the person who built it pointed out that it uses a lot more electricity and isn’t as easy to set up as a standard console.
