YouTuber Arrested for Sneaking Diet Coke to Uncontacted Tribe

A YouTube personality was detained by the Indian government following his secretive journey to North Sentinel Island with the intention of interacting with an isolated tribe. He carried gifts such as a coconut and a can of Diet Coke along with him.

24-year-old Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov is a budding content creator who specializes in exploring dangerous regions worldwide. He has already shared a collection of videos chronicling his travels across Afghanistan, which was then under the control of the Taliban.

With just 867 subscribers, Polyakov had been striving to set foot on the remote North Sentinel Island over a span of several months. His initial reported attempt was made in October 2024.

The remote North Sentinel Island lies nestled within the Bay of Bengal, sandwiched between the nations of India and Thailand. This island is particularly well-known due to its inhabitants, the Sentinelese – an isolated tribe who have gained notoriety for their aggressive responses towards any efforts made by outsiders to establish contact or communicate with them.

The island has been kept uninhabited to protect its unique culture, and it’s monitored by a guarded patrol from the Indian authorities; however, this hasn’t deterred certain adventurous explorers from attempting to secretly visit.

YouTuber arrested after setting foot on North Sentinel Island

On Saturday, March 29, Polyakov was among the travelers who reached the island. By blowing a whistle out at sea, he caught the tribe’s attention. Then, he walked ashore, left some gifts, collected a sample of sand from the beach, filmed a video, and returned to his boat.

Two days after the YouTuber’s arrest on Monday, March 31, the police chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, HGS Dhaliwal, provided further details about the legal proceedings against him.

According to Dhaliwal, the individual who holds American citizenship was brought before the local court following his detention. At present, he remains in custody for a period of three days for further questioning.

For approximately five minutes, he touched down, placed gifts on the beach, gathered sand specimens, and filmed a short video. Upon examination of his GoPro footage, it was discovered that he had entered and departed from the forbidden North Sentinel Island.

In January of 2025, Polyakov too made an attempt to reach the island, but his efforts proved futile. It’s remarkable that he’s still alive today, given that missionary John Allen Chau, aged 27, met a tragic fate in 2018 when he was allegedly slain by the Sentinelese people after illegally stepping foot on the island in prior years.

It’s not just Polyakov who has attempted to communicate with a secluded tribe; in the year 2024, it was reported that YouTube group The Nelk Boys allegedly connected with a remote tribe. However, they faced criticism after it was claimed they gave them vapes and alcohol.
