More sports are joining the streaming world: YouTube has secured exclusive rights to broadcast an NFL game during the 2025 season, which will be the first time they live-stream a full NFL game at no cost. This agreement expands upon YouTube’s existing deal as the U.S. host for the NFL’s premium Sunday Ticket package.
The upcoming NFL Week 1 game set for São Paulo, Brazil on September 5, 2025, will only be streamed on YouTube and YouTube TV to many users worldwide. However, it won’t be accessible on YouTube in Canada due to the NFL’s pre-existing streaming agreement with Bell Canada, and it will be blocked in a few other countries. This information was shared by YouTube before its Brandcast upfront event held in New York on Wednesday evening.
In February, it was revealed that the NFL would play a Week 1 game at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil, marking the start of the 2025 International Games. The Los Angeles Chargers have been selected to participate, and their opponent will be unveiled on Wednesday, May 14, when the complete schedule for the 2025 season is disclosed at 8 p.m. ET.
The exact figure YouTube paid for the rights to air Week 1’s game remains undisclosed, however it is clear that the NFL remains television’s hottest property. In the United States last year, a staggering 45 of the top 100 most-viewed TV broadcasts were NFL games, with all of the top ten being NFL matches, according to Nielsen.
Beginning with the 2023-24 season, the NFL strengthened its partnership with YouTube by making it the exclusive U.S. seller of the out-of-home Sunday Ticket package. In this seven-year agreement, Google is said to be paying the NFL over $2 billion annually for this service. Sunday Ticket provides access to all out-of-market regular season NFL games (based on viewer’s location) that are usually aired on CBS and Fox.
The National Football League (NFL) is actively securing rights to broadcast live games on streaming platforms as a strategy to broaden its appeal among younger audiences and international viewers. Last Christmas, Netflix featured two live games, one of which had a popular Beyoncé halftime show, and they will be showing another double header on Christmas Day in 2025. Moreover, Amazon’s Prime Video has been granted the rights to one Christmas-day football match for the upcoming season as part of their agreement for “Thursday Night Football” that lasts until 2033. In addition to this, Prime Video will air a wildcard game in January 2026 and host the third installment of “Black Friday Football,” which takes place the day after Thanksgiving, featuring the Chicago Bears playing against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hans Schroeder, NFL’s executive vice president of media distribution, expressed his enthusiasm about deepening the partnership with YouTube this year. This collaboration aims to broadcast the Brazil game to a global audience. Over the past few years, YouTube and YouTube TV have proven to be valuable partners for the NFL due to their extensive global reach. We eagerly anticipate the start of the season in São Paulo.
I’m thrilled to share that as a key figure at YouTube, I’m proud to announce our groundbreaking move: broadcasting the Friday night NFL game globally for free. This will be YouTube’s debut as a live NFL broadcaster, and we’re eager to showcase our unique approach. Expect an interactive viewing experience tailored exclusively by YouTube, with content creators playing a pivotal role in enhancing the overall experience.
Based on information from YouTube, over 350 million hours were spent by users watching official NFL content on the platform in 2024.
Beyond securing rights for Week 1 games, YouTube also agreed on a multiyear contract with the NFL. This deal encompasses the annual Super Bowl Flag Football game, where creators and artists participate, along with other international flag football matches. In their initial collaboration, they live-streamed the first flag football event during Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans this year, attracting over 6 million live views across the NFL’s YouTube channels, as well as those of participating creators, athletes, and artists such as IShowSpeed, Kai Cenat, Jason Kelce, Michael Vick, Cam Newton, Quavo, and Jordan Chiles.
Back in 2015, I, as a movie reviewer of sports, proudly announced the debut of the NFL’s very own YouTube channel. Fast forward to today, this channel has amassed an astounding 14 million subscribers! What’s on offer? A cornucopia of clips, highlights, game-day compilations, and even some exclusive original content series. It’s like a cinematic journey through the world of football, straight to your screen!
