YouTube Shorts surge past TikTok with 200 billion views each day

YouTube is significantly outperforming TikTok in the competition for short-form videos, as Shorts currently amass an average of 200 billion daily views.

During his speech at the 2025 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, CEO Neal Mohan unveiled a significant achievement. This milestone represents a gigantic stride from the 70 billion daily views YouTube Shorts garnered in March 2024, signifying an impressive 186% growth over the past year and a half.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce an impressive achievement – YouTube Shorts have reached an average of 200 billion views each day, according to Mohan.

To put it into perspective, based on information from Sendshort, TikTok’s daily view count is approximately 1 billion. This implies that YouTube doesn’t simply lead; it has surpassed its main competitor, TikTok, much like a front-runner in a race who laps their closest rival.

It’s worth mentioning that on March 31, 2025, YouTube adjusted its method of tracking “views” by adopting a practice similar to TikTok. Now, any time a user scrolls past a Short, even if it’s more than a second later, it will be counted as a “view.

YouTube dominates the streaming space

Moreover, Mohan emphasized another significant change in the way users access content on the platform. In fact, approximately 1 billion hours of YouTube content is viewed daily through television screens, demonstrating the vast expansion of the platform beyond mobile devices and personal computers.

Based on Nielsen’s most recent data, YouTube accounted for approximately 12.5% of total television viewing hours in the United States during May. This makes it the leading platform over streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ as well as traditional broadcast networks for the fourth consecutive month.

Approximately 50 out of the 100 most popular YouTube channels globally primarily watch content on television as their main screen, according to Mohan.

Across mobile devices and television screens, Shorts are taking over while YouTube’s traditional format continues to prosper. As a result, YouTube is now a frontrunner in various content formats.

In recent months, YouTube has been heavily focusing on its Shorts feature, enabling users to search for content within the videos.

As a dedicated viewer of the Shorts on YouTube, I’ve noticed an exciting development: these popular clips are now accompanied by ads. However, if you’re a subscriber of YouTube Premium Lite, you’ll need to upgrade to the standard, more expensive Premium plan to enjoy ad-free Shorts.
