YouTube Premium is taking away grandfathered $7.99 legacy price after raising subscription costs

As an early adopter who’s enjoyed the sweet taste of savings for years, today feels like a bitter pill to swallow – my dear YouTube Premium, we’ve had such a grand old time together for a steal, but alas, the party must come to an end. I’ve been notified that my $7.99 price tag will soon be history, replaced by the more familiar $13.99.

YouTube has just announced that they will soon discontinue the $7.99 grandfathered pricing for their Premium service, following closely on the heels of an increase in subscription fees for their users.

Originally YouTube Premium subscribers who signed up earlier will experience an increase in their monthly fees, as they were previously benefiting from a lower rate compared to more recent subscribers.

Google has kept a reduced rate for its initial paying customers as a token of gratitude for their early backing, postponing price hikes for quite some time. Yet, this practice is about to shift, commencing with the phase-out of the discounted rate initially in Europe.

In the year 2014, YouTube unveiled its initial premium subscription, originally named “Music Key.” This plan was first made accessible to a select group of early adopters at a trial price of $7.99. As the service grew and developed, the cost eventually rose to $9.99.

As a gamer last year, I was enjoying my YouTube Premium at a sweet deal of $7.99 per month. But it looks like they might be bumping up that price for those of us still on the original rate, just as they did with other subscribers who were paying $9.99. So, I guess it’s time to prepare my gaming wallet for a possible change!

In November, numerous YouTube users in various European nations received notices about an impending price hike for their Premium plans. Importantly, this premium service includes YouTube Music, so any price rise for Music applies to all the plan’s benefits. Essentially, the cost increase for Music means a cost increase overall.

Conversely, the rise in price won’t happen immediately. Instead, initial subscribers will enjoy the original rate for a bonus time span of three months. Once that duration passes, the updated pricing structure will kick in, and they’ll pay the same amount as all other users within their specific region.

YouTube’s Communication Manager, Paul Pennington, has announced an increase in the subscription costs for both YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, affecting both new and current subscribers.

Those who initially joined us through Google Play and were given the early bird discount will be granted an extra three months at their current rate,” he informed The Verge.

At present, YouTube Premium costs $13.99 in the United States, but it’s uncertain when YouTube may alter this price within the U.S. or other countries.

Based on the latest statement from YouTube Premium, there’s an upcoming change as subscriptions prices are set to rise effective from December 7, which may have left some users displeased.
