YouTube has recently increased the number of advertisements on their less expensive subscription plan, a move made only a few months following its introduction in the U.S.
In the early part of 2025, YouTube introduced a more affordable variant called Premium Lite, which is a scaled-down version of their regular Premium service compared to its pricier equivalent, offering fewer additional features.
With YouTube Premium, you get an ad-free experience across all content, have access to YouTube Music, can enjoy background play, and more. However, YouTube Premium Lite primarily focuses on eliminating advertisements during non-music video playback.
It appears that users of Premium Lite have been notified via emails from the Google-managed service, stating that there will be a shift in their service and they’ll soon see advertisements on an expanded range of content.
YouTube Premium Lite subscribers brace for ads on shorts
Around the end of May, a member of the TWiT community forum shared an email they had been sent concerning upcoming advertisements.
I’d like to inform you that as of June 30, 2025, advertisements might be introduced on Shorts. These ads will only appear alongside music content and during your searches or browsing sessions. The majority of the videos will still be ad-free.
According to DeskModder’s confirmation (a German website), they received an email that matched the information provided from the platform itself.
For a more affordable option, Premium Lite subscribers are charged just $7.99 per month, which is a substantial reduction compared to the $13.99 monthly charge for the full plan.
If you’re someone who frequently watches short videos, this update might be significant enough for you to consider upgrading to our Standard Premium package.
Simultaneously, the platform owned by Google keeps discovering creative methods for advertising. By 2024, it began displaying advertisements on pause screens. Moreover, numerous users have complained about excessive and sexually explicit ads and allege that the platform has ignored their calls for intervention.
YouTube announced in May their intention to employ artificial intelligence for the automatic insertion of advertisements at times when viewers are most emotionally engaged with a video.
