YouTube has embedded a hidden feature, or “Easter Egg,” to honor its 20-year milestone as a business. The video playback progress indicator on their platform now resembles a birthday cake.
While YouTube, as a company, was established in February 2005, the first video wasn’t uploaded until April 23rd of the same year.
In a 19-second clip titled ‘Me at the Zoo,’ originally shared by Jawed Karim, one of the co-founders, shows him positioned among a group of elephants at the zoo.
Look at these massive elephants right here! Can’t help but marvel at their incredible long trunks – it’s just amazing!
Twenty years have passed since the video was initially posted, and YouTube is marking the occasion by hiding Easter Eggs within videos scattered throughout their platform.
YouTube replaced the seek bar icon with a cake
On April 23rd, a company owned by Google subtly implemented a change, yet this update isn’t visible across all videos on the platform. Instead, you can find the image of a cake in certain popular and long-standing videos on the site.
Jawed’s latest work titled ‘Me at the Zoo’ includes an update, but locating it elsewhere might prove challenging.
On YouTube, PinkFong’s Baby Shark music video boasts an impressive 16 billion views, making it the platform’s most popular video. A distinctive Easter Egg symbol can be found on its progress bar. Following closely behind is Despacito, also adorned with a birthday cake icon, indicating its popularity as the second most watched video.
It’s unclear whether they found a way to incorporate the Easter Egg into their videos, as it seems quite arbitrary. After Despacito, the icon is seldomly seen on the most-viewed YouTube videos.
Yet, it’s featured in the teaser for GTA 6, a highly anticipated game set to drop in 2025.
The classic video for Rick Astley’s popular song “Never Gonna Give You Up” doesn’t feature the recently introduced Birthday Cake symbol, instead opting for the traditional red dot.
The well-known “Rick Roll” meme has not been overlooked by YouTube; they’ve even expressed their opinions on it through their comments section.
“Can confirm: he never gave us up,” they said.
Ever since YouTube debuted with its inaugural video, it’s grown into a household name for hosting renowned internet and mainstream personalities from around the globe. These figures have amassed such significant followings that streaming giant Netflix is now considering featuring them on their platform as well.
