Guy Ritchie is working on another Sherlock Holmes movie with a fresh take, and it’s already ahead of the BBC’s Sherlock series in one key aspect. Sherlock Holmes is a famously beloved character, and because of that, and the ownership of the rights to his stories, he’s been reimagined in countless ways across different media for many years.
When it comes to Sherlock Holmes adaptations, Guy Ritchie’s films with Robert Downey Jr. are considered among the best for the big screen, and the BBC’s Sherlock, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, stands out on television. While Ritchie’s movies stayed true to the original Victorian era, the BBC series updated the story and brought Sherlock Holmes into the modern world.
Several new Sherlock Holmes series are in the works, and one of the most anticipated is Young Sherlock on Prime Video. It’s being executive produced by Guy Ritchie, and early signs suggest it might be an improvement over the previous series, Sherlock, in at least one key area.
Prime Video’s Young Sherlock Features The Detective’s Parents
As a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, I was really intrigued by Young Sherlock. It’s based on Andrew Lane’s book series and, as you might guess, it shows us a much younger version of the detective. This Sherlock, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, is only 19 and still a student at Oxford. He’s not the brilliant, focused detective we all know and love yet – honestly, he’s a bit of a mess and still figuring things out!
Unlike the traditional Sherlock Holmes stories, this new series, Young Sherlock, doesn’t include John Watson as a friend and partner. Instead, young Holmes will encounter a cast of new, intriguing characters. The series begins with Holmes investigating his first murder – a crime at Oxford that threatens his own liberty – and quickly spirals into a much larger, worldwide conspiracy.
The series Young Sherlock introduces Sherlock Holmes’ parents, Silas (Joseph Fiennes) and Cordelia (Natascha McElhone), along with his brother Mycroft (Max Irons). A key element of the show is the exploration of Holmes’ family life, something the original Sherlock series never delved into. This allows viewers to see the dynamic between Holmes and his parents, adding a new dimension to the character.
While the series Sherlock included Holmes’ parents in a few episodes, their appearances were minor and didn’t really explore their relationship with him. The upcoming series Young Sherlock plans to give them a more significant, though not central, role, offering fans a deeper look into the detective’s family history.
Young Sherlock Can Explore Another Key Backstory The BBC Show Forgot
Because Young Sherlock focuses on Holmes’ early life, the show delves into a significant part of his history that most other versions, including Sherlock, have overlooked: the story of how Holmes and his greatest enemy, Moriarty, first encountered each other.
Moriarty was a standout character in the series Sherlock, and many fans believe the show went downhill after his death. Now, the upcoming show Young Sherlock will feature a younger version of Moriarty, played by Dónal Finn, and will likely explore how he and Sherlock Holmes first met and began their famous rivalry.
If consistently well-written with strong character development, “Young Sherlock” has the potential to surpass “Sherlock,” addressing some of the weaknesses that appeared in the later seasons of the original series.
